Aside from a new head coach, the New England Patriots will also have a new quarterback in 2024. The Patriots confirmed on Sunday that they are trading last year’s starter, Mac Jones, to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to reports, the Patriots discussed Jones trade with four teams in recent days, but the Jags were the only ones to make a firm offer. New England will receive a sixth-rounder from Jacksonville as part of the deal.

Mac Jones was drafted 15th overall by the Pats in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Alabama and was named the starter in his rookie year. Jones led New England to a 10-7 record in his rookie year while making the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

However, Jones failed to replicate his rookie campaign in the following two seasons. He particularly struggled in 2023, being benched multiple times after bad performances.

Jones will now have an opportunity to resurrect his career as a backup to Trevor Lawrence with the Jags organization. He also gets to play for his hometown team.

The Patriots, on the other hand, will likely start fresh at the QB position. They have the second-overall pick in the upcoming draft and are projected to take either LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

Mac Jones might not be the future of the New England Patriots at the quarterback position after all. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the Pats have shopped Jones to “multiple teams” this offseason and would be open to parting ways with the Alabama quarterback.

Florio adds that head coach Bill Belichick is the main driving force between attempts to trade Jones. Several names are mentioned as potential suitors, including the Las Vegas Raiders, the Houston Texans, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Washington Commanders.

The news that Jones is available in trade talks is a surprise considering how certain the Patriots seemed that he would be their guy for years to come. However, the player’s struggles in 2022 apparently got Belichick to rethink his stance.  

Mac Jones, who was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, earned a Pro Bowl nod and led the Pats to playoffs in his rookie season. But his sophomore campaign was such a disaster that he was even benched at one point. Jones went 6-8 in his 14 games as a starter and finished 2022 with 2,997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 picks.

It is unclear how New England plans to address its quarterback position if they trade Jones. Some reports linked the franchise with former MVP Lamar Jackson, but sources say this isn’t a realistic option. Besides Jones, the Patriots have last year’s fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe as part of their QB room.

Pats rookie quarterback Mac Jones scored the first touchdown of his NFL career after completing a seven-yard pass to wideout Nelson Agholor in the second quarter. Agholor rushed to give the ball to Jones so he could keep it as a souvenir, but his signal-caller surprisingly returned it immediately. 

After being handed the ball for the second time, Jones just decided to pass it to backup Brian Hoyer and continue running to the sidelines.

This move by Jones was confusing as everyone thought he wanted to keep the ball from his first TD as a pro. But it turns out that the 23-year-old player had other things in mind during the game and wasn’t bothered by any milestones.

“It’s not really about me. My job is to be the quarterback, and that’s to either hand the ball off or throw it,” Jones explained his decision via the Pats’ official website. “I can do a better job, and everyone else, I thought they played hard, but we can play even harder. We’re just going to go up from here.”

Mac Jones had a solid game against the Dolphins, completing 29 passes out of 39 attempted while throwing for 281 yards and a touchdown. However, this didn’t help the Pats avoid a loss, with Miami taking home a narrow 17-16 win.

Jones will have a chance to earn his first victory as New England’s starter in Week 2 when the Patriots face the New York Jets.

After a dominant 52-24 win over No. 3-ranked Ohio State on Monday night, the Alabama football team has now won the College Football Playoff National Championship for the sixth time in 12 years.

This is the seventh national championship for head coach Nick Saban, who won his first in 2003 at LSU before winning six with Alabama. With his seventh title, Saban breaks the tie with another Alabama legend, Paul “Bear” Bryant, for the most championships won by a major college coach.

The Alabama Crimson Tide were perfect this year, winning 13 straight games to take the title.

Known for their strong defensive efforts over the year, Saban has evolved his philosophy to put as much focus on putting up points as on keeping opponents off the scoreboard. This was never more evident than last night, with the Alabama offense never taking its foot off the pedal, putting up 52 points to make sure that Ohio State had no chance of coming back.

Alabama’s star wide receiver and recent Heisman trophy winner DeVonta Smith put in another unbelievable performance and he only needed one half of football to do it. Before leaving the game at halftime with an injured finger, Smith caught 12 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns.

Football fans can expect Alabama’s dominance to continue next year and beyond and are clearly witnessing the greatest dynasty in the history of college football.
