Spanish Football Association president Luis Rubiales confirmed that the decision to dismiss Luis Enrique from his role as national team manager had nothing to do with Enrique’s Twitch streams during the World Cup. The Spanish FA’s decision not to renew Enrique’s contract came as a result of a desire to improve the team’s performance.

After being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Morocco in a penalty shootout, the Spanish FA determined that a new direction would be required in order to improve the team’s performances on the international stage.

This led to the appointment of Luis de la Fuente as Spain’s new coach. A former Spain under-21 coach, de la Fuente was unveiled as Spain’s new manager in Madrid on Monday after the RFEF board gave its approval for his recruitment.

“I’ve read a lot of stories, that [it] was his Twitch, that it was his bicycle [rides], things like that,” Rubiales commented. “But there was nothing like that. The three of us, the outgoing sporting director [Jose Molina], the new sporting director [Albert Luque] and I, we agreed we should start a new project, led by Luis de la Fuente. There’s nothing else.”

Spain will now turn its focus to qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2024 competition. The first round of qualifiers begins in March 2023.

Spain coach Luis Enrique has expressed his frustration at his team’s 2-1 loss to Japan in their final World Cup group stage game, despite the fact that the team secured progression to the Round of 16.

“In football, you deserve it or not and we didn’t deserve it,” Enrique stated during the post-match press conference. “I’m not happy at all. I would have liked to be on top and win but in five minutes Japan scored two. We were dismantled. I never celebrate defeats so we have nothing to celebrate. We have qualified but I have nothing to celebrate.”

Upon hearing that Spain was eliminated from the competition for three minutes when fellow group members Costa Rica took a 2-1 lead against Germany, Enrique responded that he would have had a “heart attack” had he found out during the game.

While Spain took the lead through an Alvaro Morata header in the 11th minute, Japan stunned the favorite at the start of the second half, drawing level in the 48th minute through a Ritsu Doan screamer before Ao Tanaka snatched the winner three minutes later.

After taking a few months off from coaching after a personal tragedy, long-time Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is back at the reigns as manager of the Spanish National Team.

Enrique departed from the national team over the summer after the untimely death of his daughter Xana. At the time, Enrique asked for privacy as he grieved this terrible tragedy, taking time to step away from the game in order to grieve.

Now, Enrique has been re-appointed Spain’s manager with only about 7 months left until the UEFA Euro 2020 competition, at which La Roja will be considered one of the favorites.

Roberto Moreno, Enrique’s former assistant manager who was given the reigns of the team after Luis Enrique’s departure, was dismissed from his job by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales on Tuesday.

After the rumor that he would be let go leaked on Monday night, Moreno left the field in tears after Spain’s 5-0 win over Romania in Madrid.

It’s a somewhat controversial decision given the circumstances surrounding the situation, but Moreno said over the summer that he would be glad to give the job back to Luis Enrique if his former boss wanted to return.

Luis Enrique is expected to make his second debut at the helm of Spain in March as the team plays friendly matches in preparation for the summer 2020 tournament.

The Spanish Football Federation announced on Wednesday that head coach Luis Enrique had decided to step down from his position at the front of the men’s national team.

Robert Moreno, who also served on Enrique’s coaching staff at Celta Vigo, Roma, and Barcelona, will take over as La Roja’s head coach.

The circumstances regarding Enrique’s decision to leave the team have to do with personal issues. The press has respected Enrique’s privacy, not prodding into the reasons why he decided to take a step back. Some speculation has risen that one of his family members is dealing with a serious health issue, although this has not been confirmed.

Federation president Luis Rubiales stood behind Enrique’s decision at a press conference announcing his decision on Wednesday afternoon. He said that, “We have to thank Luis Enrique. We’ve learned a lot from him. We will continue to support him. He will always have the doors open in this federation. I ask the press to continue to respect him during this difficult time which is down to a personal issue.”

Enrique first left the Spanish National Team for what was deemed a temporary leave of absence back on March 26. Since then, Moreno has been in charge of the team.

Moreno will now lead Spain forward as they continue their run in the qualifiers for the Euro 2020 tournament as Enrique leaves La Roja after less than a year in charge.
