Lou Williams, who is considered one of the best sixth men in NBA history, has announced his retirement from professional basketball. Williams is riding off into the sunset after playing 17 seasons in NBA.

Williams hasn’t played at all this past season, instead coaching his daughter Jada’s eighth-grade AAU team. He last saw NBA action in 2021-22, when he averaged 6.3 points in 56 games with the Atlanta Hawks.

Lou Williams spent the early portion of his professional career with the Philadelphia 76ers before embarking on stints with the Hawks, the Toronto Raptors, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Houston Rockets, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Williams had his best stretch with the Clippers, where he averaged 20+ points in back-to-back seasons (2017–18 and 2018–19) despite coming off the bench. He won NBA Sixth Man of the Year in both seasons. He has a total of three Sixth Man of the Year awards on his resume, being tied with Jamal Crawford for most in NBA history.

Williams averaged 13.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game as a pro. He is at the top of the NBA’s all-time list for points off the bench with 13,396 and has 1,001 career games off the bench, which is the most in NBA history.

Veteran Lou Williams isn’t ready to say goodbye to basketball just yet. According to Williams’ agent Wallace Prather, the 35-year-old intends to play in the 2022-23 NBA season and perhaps beyond.

“(Williams) is not pursuing retirement, and I’ll be proactive in talking to teams during free agency,” Prather told The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Williams spent the past season with the Atlanta Hawks. He played in 56 games, averaging 6.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.9 points per game. These were his lowest numbers since his sophomore season.

Despite struggles in 2021-22, Williams should have a market as a veteran-minimum player. While being a defensive liability, he is still only two seasons removed from averaging 18.2 points and 5.6 assists per game for the LA Clippers. It isn’t hard to see him being a valuable bench player for a younger team looking for some veteran experience.

Entering the league in 2005 as a second-round pick, Lou Williams suited up for six different franchises during his 17 seasons as a pro. He is considered among the best bench players in the history of the NBA, winning one NBA Sixth Man of the Year award as a member of the Toronto Raptors and two more with the LA Clippers. His career stats include 13.9 points, 2.2 boards, and 3.4 assists per game.

After leading the 8th seed Los Angeles Clippers by 31 points midway through the third quarter, the Golden State Warriors thought that they would cruise on their way to a 2-0 series lead.

The Clippers, however, had other plans.

Los Angeles completed the largest comeback in the history of the NBA playoffs to climb back from 31 points down and stun the top-seeded Warriors by a 135-131 final score.

The final result was sealed after Clippers reserve guard Landry Shamet hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 17 seconds to go.

Steph Curry missed his three-point attempt to send the game to overtime, and that was all she wrote on Monday night for the reigning NBA champs.

The Clippers’ comeback was orchestrated in large part thanks to 6th man Lou Williams’ outstanding performance. The bench guard scored 36 points and dished out 11 points to help his team climb back.

While Golden State remains a heavy favorite to win the series, they could’ve never foreseen a result like Monday’s.

The series will return to action on Thursday night at the Staples Center with a rejuvenated Clippers squad looking to shock the world.

While the starters on any sports team might get most of the glory, it pays to be a backup sometimes, too.

Lou Williams, the Los Angeles Clippers’ sixth man and one of the best bench players in the history of the league, set the all-time record for points scored off of the bench in the Clippers’ 140-115 win over the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

Williams, who is now in his 13th season in the NBA, had a masterful performance on Monday, scoring 34 points in the Clippers rout.

He passed point guard Dell Curry to set the mark for points off of the bench with a basket in the fourth quarter of the win on Monday.

Despite being 32 years old, Williams has been one of the Clippers´ most important players this season. Despite only averaging 26 minutes per game, he has scored more than 20 points per game on average and served as a veteran presence on a Clippers team that has exceeded expectations.

Williams has been named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year twice in his career, once with the Raptors in 2015, and again with the Clippers last season.

He appears to be the favorite to take home the award this year as well.

It´s certainly not bad for a former 45th overall pick and a bench player. Williams has proven that the brightest stars in sports sometimes aren’t even starters.

It looks like the Los Angeles Clippers won’t ship everyone from the team. Their guard Lou Williams received a three-year extension from the Clippers on Wednesday. According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal is worth $24 million.

It was nice for the organization to commit to me the same way I’ve committed to these guys this year,” – said Williams on Wednesday. “In years past, these scenarios don’t usually go my way, so it was nice for one to go my way and [for me to end up] somewhere I wanted to be… It’s just nice to have that one consistent — you know you’re going to be somewhere for an extended period of time.

Lou Williams was one of the most sought-after players in the NBA as the trade deadline approached. He is currently averaging career best in points (23.3) and assists (5.3) per game which combined with his rather cheap ($7 million) and an expiring contract, made him a desirable target.

Williams spent 13 years in the NBA so far and has previously played for Philadelphia, Atlanta, Toronto, the Lakers, and Houston before coming to Clippers in the Chris Paul trade. It looks like the 31-year old wanted to find some stability in career, and Clippers offered just that.

I feel like I’m a quality basketball player, and usually quality basketball players don’t get moved so much,” – he said. “I understand I had a relatively cheap deal considering the numbers I had. It was an expiring contract, and that’s enticing to teams trying to make playoff runs. I understand the business part of it, but personally, it’s like my kids didn’t know who to root for anymore. They were confused — they were walking around with Rockets shorts and Lakers jerseys. They just didn’t know what was going on.
