The New York Giants, desperately need some help in the defensive backfield and they’re going to get it.

The team is reportedly signing former Tennesee Titans and New England Patriots defensive back Logan Ryan to a one-year contract worst up to $7.5 million.

This will be a homecoming for Logan, who was born and raised in New Jersey and played college football at Rutgers. Ryan’s contract with the Titans expired last year and the team had no interest in extending him. Ryan was patient, waiting for the right opportunity since March.

Earlier in the offseason, Ryan might have confused some of his potential suitors by stating on a podcast that he was more of a safety than a cornerback, despite the fact that he has almost always lined up exclusively as an outside or slot corner in his career.

Indications grew that Ryan was getting serious about finding a team sooner rather than later when he switched agents and signed with power broker Joel Segal five days ago.

Ryan will be making 25% less with the Giants than he was making with the Titans, but he looks to be in a good place where he can potentially extend his career by performing up to expectations. Plus, he’s already familiar with Giants coach Joe Judge from the time the two spent together in New England.

The Giants need help in their young defensive backfield. Their rookie safety Xavier McKinney recently injured his foot and will be out for more than 10 weeks and former first-round pick DeAndre Baker is on the Commissioner’s exempt list because of pending criminal charges against him.

NFL teams were told on Tuesday that they can start holding tryouts for free agents that they are interested in potentially signing.

A memo was sent from the league to teams stating that they can now get a better look at these players on the field, but will obviously have to follow safety protocol related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to reports, all of the free agents will have to undergo COVID-19 entry screening before they are able to join in on any team activities. This means that they would have to test negative three consecutive times if they are not currently on a team or two times if they were roster cuts or picked up by a team via trade or waiver claims.

Because of the pandemic and the teams’ inability to get a good look at free agents, there are still a significant number of high-quality free agents available, including pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney is looking for a big contract, which no team has wanted to commit to this offseason, since no one has been able to get a good look at him after he had offseason surgery to address a nagging core injury.

Expect several teams to bring him in as soon as possible, as well as other free agents such as Larry Warford, Everson Griffen, and Logan Ryan, who should all receive a good amount of interest from teams around the league right off the bat.

Despite playing the majority of his football career as a cornerback, free agent veteran Logan Ryan doesn’t relate to that position anymore. Instead, Ryan views himself as a safety heading into the 2020 NFL season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Ryan’s representatives from Schwartz & Feinsod sent an e-mail to all 32 general managers in the NFL in which they compared the 29-year-old player with the rest of the top safeties in the league.

Ryan has been a free agent market since May when he announced he’ll be leaving Tennesse Titans after three years with the franchise. The 29-year-old safety didn’t find the interest he was hoping for, however, so the position change is probably an attempt to entice the teams with promises of versatility.

This might prove to be a smart move since the versatile players on defense are sought-after in the league these days. Still, this might not be enough to convince an organization to give Logan Ryan a rich contract he’s asking. Reportedly, Ryan has been demanding a deal with $10 million yearly salary.

Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and Philadelphia Eagles were lately mentioned as teams interested in Ryan. New York Jets even had internal discussions about bringing him in, but haven’t made a concrete move so far.

Ryan, who previously also played with New England Patriots, has 109 NFL career games with 494 tackles, 11.0 sacks, 78 pass deflections, 17 interceptions, and one touchdown.

Corner Logan Ryan was a big part of Tennessee Titans’ success last year, contributing to the team’s road to AFC Championship with a career-best season. Still, this didn’t help him much in an attempt to get a new contract, so Ryan decided to play elsewhere in 2020.

Ryan confirmed via social media on Tuesday that he won’t resign with Titans, opting to leave the franchise as a free agent.

“My chapter in Tennessee has come to a close,” Ryan wrote on Instagram before thanking Titans’ fans and former teammates for their support in the past three years.

“I’m looking forward to continue to play at an elite level for a organization that’s a great fit for my family and me,” he added.

Ryan made 16 starts last season with Tennessee, contributing with career-high 113 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 18 pass deflections alongside four interceptions and four forced fumbles. He added 25 tackles, two pass deflections, one interception and one defensive touchdown in the postseason.

Despite all of this, Titans were reportedly reluctant to meet Logan Ryan’s contract demands after he hit the free agency this offseason. The 29-year-old is arguably set for his last big contract and wants to make the most of it. We’ll see if he gets that somewhere else now that Titans are out of the race.

Ryan joined Tennessee Titans in 2017 as a free agent. He previously played with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowl rings.
