On the heels of the French government’s announcement that professional sporting events would not return the beginning of September, the country’s Ligue 1 soccer league was forced to cancel the rest of its season.

On Thursday, news leaked that Paris Saint-Germain, which held a twelve-point lead over second-place Marseille in the standings before the season was called off, will officially be crowned champions of the 2019-20 season.

PSG had not clinched the title mathematically, but it would have been difficult to imagine any scenario in which the megaclub didn’t finish the season on top.

However, Ligue 1’s decision does differ from the other well-known European league that has announced its cancellation. The Netherlands’ Eredivisie, which saw a close race between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, opted to not name a champion.

The squad from the French capital won 22 of its 27 matches in domestic play this season, drawing only twice and losing three games. The 2019-20 title will be their seventh consecutive Ligue 1 triumph, with no other side having won the competition since 2011-12.

Marseille, the second-place finishers, will be awarded a Champions League spot for their strong campaign for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Rennes, in third place, will have to play the qualification rounds in order to look to qualify for a spot.

Lille and Reims, fourth and fifth, will participate in the next edition of the UEFA Europa League, and sixth place Nice will play in the qualification rounds.

Sports fans in France learned some unwelcomed news on Tuesday. The country’s Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that all major sports events will be banned until September due to coronavirus pandemic. This also means that the French Ligue 1 will most likely have to cancel the remainder of its 2019/20 season.

Philippe broke the news on Tuesday when he talked about loosening the social distancing rules in the country.

“Big sporting events will not be able to take place before September,” said Philippe. “The 2019/20 season, notably for football (soccer), will not be able to resume.”

Ligue 1 and lower-tier soccer competitions in France were reportedly planning to resume activities in May while aiming to have games in June. The clubs had between eight and nine games left to finish the season, but it looks like they won’t get a chance to do it.

It remains to be seen how Ligue 1 approaches the ensuing questions of a champion, European competition spots, and relegation/promotion.

Before the season was suspended in March, Paris-Saint Germain was at the top of the table with 12 points ahead of second-placed Olympique de Marseille. At the bottom of the table, Toulouse was last with only 13 points and was the only team without any realistic chances to stay in Ligue 1.

Previously, Netherland’s Eredivisie also canceled the remainder of the season, deciding they will not have a champion this year. The league also decided to keep the current club structure, meaning teams won’t get relegated.

The French Ligue 1 season 2019-20 has rolled out this past week, marking the start of the title race in the top French football tiers. The reigning champion, Paris Saint-Germain, is the main candidate for the title, while other rivals such as Monaco and Lyon will seek for their chance to disturb the Parisians’ plans for this season.

Monaco and Lyon presented the biggest match on the opening day on Friday, which ended with a 0-3 win for the visitors. The scoring was opened early in the 5th minute by Lyon’s striker Moussa Dembele and then 25 minutes later one of the most experienced players in Monaco, Cesc Fabregas was shown a yellow card after a rough start over Leo Dubois, only to be reverted into a red card after the referee consulted the VAR system. After that red card, Lyon extended their lead to 0-2 before halftime and finished the job before the end, scoring the third goal.

The title defenders PSG had an easy opening day against Nimes, the newly promoted team from Ligue 2 by winning 3-0 with the goals from Edison Cavanni, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe.
