Veteran running back Le’Veon Bell was one of the league’s biggest stars during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But after leaving the franchise in 2019 following failed contract negotiations, Bell quickly found out that the grass is not always greener.

Four years later, Bell is out of the NFL and seems to regret the way he left the franchise. In a recent appearance on the Steel Here podcast, the 31-year-old player said that he never actually wanted to leave Pittsburgh.

“That’s where I got drafted,” Bell explained. “Especially after going to different teams and seeing how it is, it’s like when the team has their guy, you’re their guy. I was Pittsburgh’s guy.”

Bell, who hasn’t played at all in 2022, also admitted to being “a little petty” during his contract negotiations with the franchise.

“I’m thinking, ‘Damn, could I really have just ate [the money]? Yeah, I probably could’ve,” he added.

Le’Veon Bell earned three Pro Bowl nods and three All-Pro selections as a Steeler between 2013 and 2017. Ahead of 2018, the Steelers placed a franchise tag on Belle for the second straight year after the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement about a new contract. However, instead of playing on the tag, Bell opted to sit out for an entire year and hit free agency in 2019.

Bell ended up signing with the New York Jets on a four-year, $52.5 million contract but never managed to reach the same level of play that he had with the Steelers. He was released after a year and a half and bounced around the league in the next two seasons.

This Sunday, Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell will dress up for his first NFL game since January 2018. And while he will be rocking green New York Jets jersey, it turns out that Bell’s motivation for good performance will come from black and gold; colors he wore for the first five years of his career.

After Pittsburgh Steelers did not want to meet his contract demands during the 2018 offseason, Bell decided to sit out the entire last season. This allowed him to become a free agent and sign a lucrative deal with the Jets. Now, after getting his money, the 27-year-old intends to show Steelers that they made a huge mistake by letting him go.

“It didn’t work out in Pittsburgh. I’m out of Pittsburgh. And now I’m in a new city, a new team, and a lot of people haven’t even given us a chance cause they don’t like our roster,” – said Bell. “They think we don’t have the talent. I’m thinking I’m going to show everybody. I’m going to show people that, look, Pittsburgh had something special and they let it go. That’s what I’m going to go out there and do.”

While Le’Veon Bell is certainly motivated to have a productive season this year, it remains to be seen whether the prolonged absence from the game has left any consequences. In 2017, the last season he played with Steelers, Bell managed to rush for 1,291 and nine touchdowns, while recording career-high 85 receptions for 655 yards and two touchdowns.

After a truly bizarre 2018 season, running back Le’Veon Bell has finally found a home in the NFL.

Bell was let go by the Pittsburgh Steelers and let go earlier this month after refusing to play in 2018 after a contract feud that let to him missing the entire season.

The New York Jets agreed to a 4-year, $52.5 million contract with Bell on Wednesday. The agreement between the two parties will give Bell $35 million guaranteed, and the contract could be worth over $60 million if he fulfills incentive clauses.

Bell was considered one of the top running backs in the league before sitting out 2018.

The Michigan State alum was a first-team All Pro selection twice with Pittsburgh, in 2014 and 2017. He was also named a second-team All Pro in 2016.

Bell was given these accolades due to his fantastic performances with the Steelers. He set the Steelers’ franchise record with an 86.3 yard per game average and scored 42 rushing and receiving touchdowns in his four years wearing the black and gold.

Now, Bell will join a young New York Jets team that was one of the worst in the NFL last season.

The Jets hope that Bell will help their offense improve and lead them into playoff contention for the first time in several years.

After choosing to sit out the 2018/19 season, Le’Veon Bell aims to get a $17 million a year contract next season with at least $45 million in guaranteed money, NFL insider Ian Rapoport said on Sunday.

“He wanted $17 million from the Steelers last year,” Rapoport said. “A new year, a higher (salary) cap, he wants more than $17 million. Heavy in the guaranteed money, from what I’m told, seeking more than $45 million in guarantees.”

Bell reportedly wants a long-term contract, probably a 5-year contract that promises over $80 million.

“He could potentially look for a five-year, $85 million deal. Consider the fact that it could be front-loaded, he may actually get the $20 million-plus over maybe the first two years that he wants,” Rapoport added.

The Steelers have the power to match any offers the 26-year-old receives. But considering they refused to make any guaranteed money promises, there is a chance they could let Bell move to a new city.

Bell hasn’t confirmed any of the reports but that won’t stop speculations of where he will go next. With him sitting out the whole season, debates will continue to center on whether the running back will attract any big contracts.

At the moment, the New York Jets, the Detroit Lions, Houston, and the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly interested in making offers to Bell.

Pittsburgh Steelers and their star running back Le’Veon Bell couldn’t reach an agreement about a long-term contract before franchise tag deadline set for Monday’s 4 p.m. ET. This means that Bell will play under a franchise tag for a second consecutive year. It could also mean that this will be the last season as a Steeler according to his agent.

His intention was to retire as a Steeler,” – Bell’s agent Adisa Bakari told ESPN‘s Adam Schefter. “But now that there’s no deal, the practical reality is this now likely will be Le’Veon’s last season as a Steeler.”

Le’Veon Bell also went on his Twitter profile after the contract negotiations broke down and promised the fans that 2018 will be his “best season to date.”

Pittsburgh Steelers also issued a statement, confirming that Bell will play under the exclusive franchise tag and that the two sides will try to work out a long-term deal after 2018 season wraps up.

Even though we could not reach a long-term contract agreement with Le’Veon Bell, we are excited he will be with the team in 2018,” – said Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert in a statement. “We worked very hard to find common ground, but we were unable to accomplish that prior to today’s deadline. Le’Veon will play this season under the exclusive franchise tag designation.

After the 2018 season is completed, we again will attempt to work out a long-term contract with Le’Veon in the hope that he will continue his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.” – the organization added.

Steelers made two long-term offers to Le’Veon Bell so far; a $13.3 million in the summer of 2017 and slightly bigger offer early 2018. Then, according to NFL.com, they presented their last offer over the weekend, which was $70 million over 5 years with more than $33 million in guarantees. Although this would make Bell the highest paid running back in the history of NFL, he turned down the offer seeking a salary in the neighborhood of $17 million annually.

Back in March, Pittsburgh Steelers placed the franchise tag on their star running back Le’Veon Bell for a second straight year. Still, both parties are working hard to get a long-term deal done, and 26-year-old All-Pro now gave an update about the contract talks. Bell was optimistic about the situation and hinted that he and the Steelers are getting closer to making a deal.

Obviously, the people in the organization try to do what’s best for them, and I’m trying to do what’s best for me,” – said Bell during his appearance on NFL Network’s Top 100 broadcast. “We’re working on it. We’re a lot closer than we were last year at this time. That’s what I’m happy about. None of that matters if we don’t get it done. Hopefully, we’ll try to get something done. That’s what I’m looking forward to. I got confidence we’ll get it done. I want to do it.

Le’Veon Bell, who earned $12.12 million on last year’s tag, would earn $14.5 million on this year’s tag, but he has stated numerous times that he prefers a long-term deal even if that mean’s signing with another team.

Bell decided to miss the Steelers training camp in 2017 in order to protest against the tag, and on several occasions hinted that he might do the same this year as well. But, that isn’t something he would gladly do.

I don’t want to have … what happened last year,” – said Bell. “If it came down to it, then I’ve got to do what I’ve gotta do, take my stand and protect myself. But I don’t want to have to do that. I want to go to camp and play for the Steelers long-term.

In 2017 Le’Veon Bell had another exceptional season, rushing for 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns. He also added 655 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Pittsburg Steelers announced on Tuesday that they have placed the exclusive franchise tag on their running back Le’Veon Bell for the second year in a row. This means that Bell can only negotiate a long-term contract with the Steelers, and if both parties fail to reach a deal, he will play under the franchise tag for 2018 NFL season, which will be worth $14.5 million. Steelers and the 26-year-old running back have until July 16 to reach a long-term contract deal.

We’re not coming to a number we both agree on — they are too low, or I guess they feel I’m too high,” – said Bell to ESPN about contract negotiations. “I’m playing for strictly my value to the team. That’s what I’m asking. I don’t think I should settle for anything less than what I’m valued at.”

After the 2017 season ended, Bell said he doesn’t want to be tagged again, and will consider early retirement or sit out the season if he ends up having to play under a franchise tag again. According to the reports, Pittsburg Steelers have increased their offer to Bell compared to the last year. He also had a two-year deal, worth $30 million from the organization which he also refused.

I believe I am [confident]. … I think with both sides wanting to get something done. … I think that certainly aids your ability to get that done,” – said Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert back in February. “We do know that Le’Veon has been a great player for us. We think he can still be a great player from this point forward, and we would love to have him to be with the Steelers for the rest of his career.

Le’Veon Bell had a league-high 321 carries in 2017 season while rushing for 1,291 rushing and having nine rushing touchdowns. He also added 85 receptions for 655 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Unless suffering a career-ending injury, not many football players would consider retiring at age 25. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell doesn’t have injury problems, but he revealed to ESPN that he is considering sitting out the next season or even retiring if the Steelers place a franchise tag on him again. The two times first-team All-Pro played under a franchise tag last season, which saw him earn $12.1 million. In case that the Steelers don’t come up with a satisfactory offer to get Bell to sign a long-term contract, they could use the franchise tag again which would come up to $14.5 million in 2018.

Reportedly, the Steelers have offered Bell a contract under which he would make over $30 million in the first two years, but the running back felt that didn’t reflect his value. He often spoke in the past about wanting to set standards when it comes to salaries for other running backs.

Just get the numbers straight, exactly where we want them. I’m not going to settle for anything,” – said Bell about his contract expectations. “I know what I do and what I bring to the table. I’m not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I’m not getting what I feel I’m valued at.

It isn’t like Bell would want to leave Pittsburgh and the Steelers organization. He would like to end his career with the franchise but isn’t afraid to ask for what he thinks he deserves.

I want to be here, finish my career here,” – Bell said. “But if not, I’ll just handle it, however, I’ve got to handle it.”

Le’Veon Bell didn’t let the contract negotiations affect his game in 2017. He rushed 321 times for 1,291 yards in 2017, adding 85 receptions for 655 yards and 11 touchdowns in total.

ESPN has reported that according to their sources, Le’Veon Bell visited the Pittsburgh Steelers facilities, fulfilling his promise that he will be back on September the 1st. It is believed he may have undergone a medical and maybe even signed $12.1 million franchise tender.

For those unfamiliar with the drama surrounding Le’Veon Bell’s new contract, this running back couldn’t strike a long term deal agreement with the Steelers before the franchise-tagged players July 17 deadline. After the talks collapsed, Bell held out of training camp but made a public promise that he will be back on the team. It is believed that Bell is looking to set an example when it comes to contracts for running backs, thinking they are underpaid. Some sources claim he is looking for a $17 million contract. Maybe he will manage to get it if he manages to repeat the last season’s performances. Le’Veon Bell had a monstrous 2016, compiling 1,884 yards, 75 receptions, and 9 touchdowns in just 12 games. In the post-season, Bell rushed in the first two games 167 and 170 yards respectively before picking up a groin injury. Given these performances, many consider Le’Veon Bell to be the best running back in the NFL at this moment.

He was suspended for first three games of 2016 season, after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The suspension came after Bell missed a random drug test. He was also suspended for three games in 2015 (4 games before appeal) when he and LeGarrette Blount got arrested in August 2014 for DUI and marijuana possession charges.

Entering the 2013 NFL Draft, Bell was projected as second or third round pick. He was considered to be among 5 best running backs in the draft according to several analysts. Steelers ended up drafting him with 48th overall pick. His career statistics include 6,050 yards rushed, 31 touchdowns and 227 receptions in 47 games played in NFL.
