The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back their franchise’s leading rusher LeSean McCoy on a one-day contract to allow the running back to retire as a member of the organization. The Eagles will also hold a special retirement ceremony during their Week 4 clash against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team announced the news on social media on Thursday.

McCoy spent the first six years of his NFL career in Philadelphia before suiting for the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a free agent since his contract with the Bucs expired in March.

“After 12 years in the NFL, I’ve decided to retire an Eagle because this is home to me,” McCoy said in a statement published on Eagles’ website. “I still have that green inside my heart… I’ve just always seen myself as an Eagle. It’s only right to come back home and retire an Eagle.”

LeSean McCoy entered the NFL as the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2009. In the next six years, McCoy rushed for 6,792 yards that ranked him first on the franchise’s all-time list. He also ranks third in rushing touchdowns with 44. While in Philly, he earned two First-team All-Pro nods and was selected to the Pro Bowl three times.

McCoy left the Eagles in 2015 when the team traded him to the Bills. He earned three more Pro Bowl nods in Buffalo before leaving in 2019 and embarking on one-year stints with the Chiefs and the Bucs. In each of his last two stops, McCoy won a Super Bowl ring.

Although Buffalo Bills’ running back LeSean McCoy was linked with a move to Philadelphia Eagles in recent weeks, the move didn’t go through before the NFL trade deadline. This doesn’t just mean that McCoy will play out this season with the Bills, but could also mean he will extend his stay in Buffalo for few extra years.

Talking about Bills’ plans regarding LeSean McCoy, the team’s general manager Brandon Beane confirmed that the player remains part of the organization’s plans for the future.

LeSean is still a very good player in this league,” – Beane told The Buffalo News. “Our offense is not where we want it, but LeSean is still playing well. He’s a talented player. We like what he brings, to the point we’ll have him back in 2019. He’ll definitely be a part of that.

After making five straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2013 to 2017, LeSean McCoy saw his production take a serious dip in the first half of 2018. In the seven NFL games he played this year, McCoy had 75 carries for 257 yards while failing to score a single touchdown. He is also averaging career-low 3.4 yards per carry.

I ain’t expect to have no season like this,” – recently said McCoy about his performances this year. “I’m not really playing well at all. … It’s a different season. I’m 30 years old, playing since when I’ve been in high school. This stuff [has] never happened to me. It is tough.

McCoy has rushed for 10,349 yards and 66 touchdowns during 11 years he spent in the league.

Buffalo Bills’ running back LeSean McCoy is entering his 10th season in the NFL, and already has achieved a lot during his time in the league. In 2017 McCoy became the 30th player in NFL history to get to the 10,000 rushing yards. He also has six Pro-Bowl appearances to his name and two First-team All-Pro honors. Despite all of this, the 29-year-old feels like he has a lot “more to prove.”

I have more to prove,” – McCoy told reporters during his annual training camp. “It’s just like, ‘How long can he keep doing it? How long can he keep being productive?’ And that drives me. It really does.

LeSean McCoy had 1,138 rushing yards and six touchdowns, alongside 448 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in 2017, and was an instrumental player in leading the Bills to their first playoff appearances in 18 years. With Bills making improvements in the offseason and drafting quarterback Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick in 2018 NFL Draft, McCoy thinks the team can push for even bigger things.

We have a great thing going on there,” – he added. “I’m trusting the process with [head coach] Sean McDermott and [general manager] Brandon Beane. We got a nice team, so I’m happy to be a part of that and I think it’s a big future for us.

LeSean McCoy entered the league in 2009 when the Philadelphia Eagles took him in the second round of that year’s draft. He was to a great start of his NFL career, leading the league in rushing touchdowns in 2011 and rushing yards in 2013. Still, the Eagles decided to trade him to the Bills in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso.
