The Dallas Cowboys made a pair of significant moves on Friday, releasing linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and wide receiver Michael Gallup.

According to Cowboy’s announcement, Vander Esch was released with a failed physical designation, while Gallup is post-June 1 cut.

The Cowboys are expected to save around $2 million by releasing Vander Esch. Moving on from Gallup, on the other hand, saves the franchise $9.5 million in salary cap in 2024 but comes with $8.7 million in dead money in 2025. Additionally, the Cowboys avoid having Gallup’s salary become guaranteed for this upcoming season.

Vander Esch was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cowboys and made the Pro Bowl and Second-team All-Pro in his rookie season. However, a series of neck injuries prevented the former Boise State product from building on the great start of his pro career. He only played a full season once since then and was limited to five games in 2023.

Gallup was part of the same draft class as Vander Esch, being a third-round pick out of Colorado State. His best year as a pro came in 2019 when he had 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. Gallup suffered a torn ACL in 2021 and was never the same player again. He finished 2023 with 34 receptions for a career-low 418 yards.

The Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is set to miss the rest of the season after a recurring neck injury. This ongoing health issue has also brought his career into question.

“He’s an integral part of that defense out there,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said of the linebacker. “We just wish him well, and just the nature of his potential injury here causes me to really think longer term and beyond what it means for next week or beyond what it means for next month. It has everything to do with what’s best in his interest.”

After jamming his neck during October 8’s 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Vander Esch was eligible to return from injured reserve this week, however, his pain persisted. His neck issues began in 2018 before he was drafted by the Cowboys, and in 2019, he underwent a fusion procedure after missing seven of the final nine games of the season.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is expected to miss between four and six weeks after picking up a neck strain during his team’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers. According to coach Mike McCarthy, Vander Esch could be placed on injured reserve, meaning that he would be forced to miss a minimum of four games.

“High caution is in place here,” McCarthy explained, particularly given the player’s history of neck issues. Vander Esch missed the last three games of last season due to a neck injury and underwent surgery after the 2019 season after missing seven games due to neck problems.

X-rays of Vander Esch’s neck were taken at the stadium, which came back negative. The player also underwent an MRI and other tests on Monday. In order to replace Vander Esch, the Cowboys are considering adding a veteran, however, McCarthy explained that further information is needed before making a final decision.

Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is going to have to battle back from an injury once again after recovering from a neck injury that kept him out of the majority of the 2019 season.

In the Cowboys’ first game of the season, Vander Esch fractured his collarbone. While he will most likely be back this season, Vander Esch will definitely be out for an extended period of time—a huge loss for Dallas.

In the one quarter that Vander Esch was able to play on Sunday, he registered three tackles.

Vander Esch made an immediate impact in his rookie season in 2018, registering 140 tackles and being named to the Pro Bowl. The former first-round pick missed seven games in 2019 with the aforementioned neck injury.

The star linebacker wasn’t the only Cowboys player that suffered a serious injury in Week 1. Tight end Blake Jarwin suffered what appears to be a torn ACL and will most likely be out for the year.

The Cowboys lost their first game of the 2020 season to the Los Angeles Rams 20-17. It was the debut of new head coach Mike McCarthy, who replaced Jason Garrett this offseason.

Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowl linebacker Leighton Vander Esch won’t return to the field this season, but he should be ready for the next. According to NFL Network, Vander Esch will undergo neck surgery in the coming days that will allow him to return to action before training camp in 2020.

Vander Esch played nine games in 2019, before being shut down due to neck injury. There was a concern that these issues, which he had since college, might jeopardize his NFL career. Luckily for the 23-year-old and Cowboys, further tests showed that minor procedure would be able to fix those issues and enable the player to return without limitations next season.

After finding out the news, Dallas decided to place Vander Esch on Injured Reserve.

Leighton Vander Esch had a spectacular rookie season in 2018 when he finished the year with 140 tackles, seven pass deflections, and two interceptions. This brought him a Pro Bowl appearance as well as Second-team All-Pro and PFWA All-Rookie Team selections.

Vander Esch continued in the same manner this season as well, having 72 tackles, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and 0.5 sacks before being shut down due to the injury.
