Kyrie Irving would like to team up with his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James this offseason. However, this doesn’t include him joining the Los Angeles Lakers as many predicted. Instead, Irving would like to have the reunion happen in Dallas.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Irving recently reached out to James to see whether he would like to play alongside him with the Mavericks.

It is interesting to hear that Irving is inviting James to Dallas, especially since it isn’t certain whether he’ll be there. Irving is a free agent this offseason, and even though the Mavs can offer him the most money, he might be looking elsewhere if an opportunity arises.

While the trio of Irving, James, and Luka Doncic would be widely entertaining to watch, the chances of that happening are slim to none. This is mainly because James would have to want to come to Dallas, and the Lakers would need to be willing to let him go. From there, the Mavs would need to strip down their roster just to fit the salaries of their Big 3 under the salary cap.

The more realistic option is that Irving and James join forces in Los Angeles. The Lakers would be able to sign Irving if he is willing to take less money or acquire him in a sign-and-trade with the Mavs.

Irving joined the Mavericks ahead of the NBA trade deadline from the Brooklyn Nets. He averaged 26.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 20 games he played for the Mavs but failed to help the franchise make the playoffs.

“If I was in the same maturity line and understanding of who I am, and I look back, we definitely, definitely would’ve won more championships, because there would’ve been a better man-to-man understanding about what I’m going through. I didn’t know how to share my emotions,” Irving said reflecting on that period. “I didn’t know how to do that. So instead of sharing, I isolated myself.”

Irving added that he also regrets not talking to his then-teammate LeBron James and trying to work things out.

Irving helped the Cavs win their only championship in franchise history during the 2015-16 NBA season. Cleveland would go on to return to the Finals next year but lost to Golden State Warriors in five games. This turned out to be the last appearance for Irving in a Cavaliers jersey as he demanded a trade during the offseason and was eventually sent to the Boston Celtics.

Kyrie Irving would go on to spend two underwhelming seasons in Boston before teaming up with Kevin Durant and signing with the Brooklyn Nets as a free agent. Irving’s time with the Nets is also proving testing as the star-studded team failed to progress past the second round since getting the two All-Stars on board.

“I’m told Kyrie Irving will grant the Lakers an interview this offseason, this summer,” – said Smith during his radio show. “The Lakers will have an opportunity to get Kyrie Irving to come to L.A. I did not say he’s coming to L.A.! I did not say that! I don’t know what he’s going to do, but during his free-agent tour, I’m told he is going to give the Lakers an interview.”

At the beginning of the season, Kyrie Irving repeatedly stated that he is willing to sign a long term extension with the Celtics when the time is due. Still, as Boston struggled this season with chemistry issues and bad performances, the narrative changed and now it seems that Irving is at least willing to consider other options.

Irving is currently averaging 23.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.5 steals this season.

League sources told ESPN that Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics engaged in serious trade talks which would be centered on Kyrie Irving. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski shared the news on his Twitter account.
