Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil is set to remain with the team after agreeing to a three-year, $75 million extension, ESPN reported on Saturday. This deal sees him become the highest-paid offensive linesman in the league.

Included in the deal is a $30 million signing-on bonus along with $50 million fully guaranteed, with total guarantees going up to $60 million. This deal sees Tunsil surpass San Francisco 49ers star Trent Williams, who was previously the league’s highest-paid left tackle, earning $23.01 million per season since 2021 as part of his six-year, $138.06 million extension that included a fully guaranteed $55.1 million.

The Texans expressed a high willingness to keep Tunsil in Houston, particularly after the 28-year-old enjoyed a strong season in 2022. He was named a Pro Bowler for the third time last season, also finishing third among all left tackles in All-Pro voting.

Signing Tunsil for an extended period made sense for the Texans, who will be used to protect the blindside of any newcomer quarterback. With the second overall pick in the draft, the team is highly expected to select a quarterback.

Houston Texans and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil have reportedly engaged in contract negotiations in recent days. Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reports that Texans have made an initial offer of $18.5 million a year to the 25-year-old Pro Bowler.

While this figure would make Tunsil the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league, it still might not be enough to get the job done. According to Wilson, Tunsil is aiming for a much higher number and will likely ask for a yearly salary north of $20 million.

Considering that Tunsil still has one year, worth $10.35 million, on his rookie deal, there is no rush for the deal to be completed. However, Texans would like to get the job done sooner than later, as the extension can only get pricier in the future.

Houston Texans acquired Laremy Tunsil from Miami Dolphins last year, sending two first-rounders and a second-round pick. Texans also got wideout Kenny Stills as part of the deal.

Considering that they have paid such a steep price, Texans will probably do whatever it takes to keep Tunsil on their roster for years to come. Tunsil, on the other hand, has all the leverage, which means that he might end up getting the number he wants.

Tunsil was Dolphins’ 13th overall pick in 2016. He was named to PFWA All-Rookie Team in his first year in the league while earning his first Pro Bowl nod last season.
