The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t allow the reigning NBA champions to get a new lease on life. The LA team beat the Golden State Warriors 101-122 on Friday night to end the series between two teams in six games and advance to the Western Conference Finals.

After missing out on the chance to finish the job in Game 5, the Lakers were determined not to waste another chance in Game 6. They built a 10-point lead by the half and never allowed the Warriors to get close later on.

LeBron James delivered one of his signature efficient games that saw him score 30 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He shot 10-of-14 from the floor while going 2-of-3  from behind the three-point line. His fellow All-Star Anthony Davis added 17 points and 20 rebounds.

“I just wanted to come in and make some plays and be efficient and defend at a high level, and help (Davis) rebound,” James said after the game. “Help our team make winning plays. And I was able to make a few of them.”

Making the West finals represents a huge success for the Los Angeles Lakers, considering their struggles in the regular season. The Lakers started 2-10 and only climbed above .500 late in the season to get in the play-in. However, once the postseason tipped off, the Lakers were a team on a mission and looked in great shape to make it to the NBA Finals for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

LeBron James was once again at his best when it mattered the most. James delivered a strong all-around performance in the play-in tournament on Wednesday night against the Golden State Warriors and secured a 103-100 win for the Los Angeles Lakers. This included a clutch go-ahead 34-foot 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter.

The game didn’t start well for the Lakers, who found themselves 13 points behind at the half. To shake things up, Los Angeles’ head coach Frank Vogel decided to pull out Andre Drummond and put Anthony Davis at center. This proved to be a turning point in the contest, as the Lakers rallied back and almost erased the entire deficit.

The fourth quarter saw teams exchanging points, and at that point, it was anyone’s game. The only difference was that one team had James and the other didn’t.

With around a minute left in the contest, both sides had 100 points apiece. The Lakers had the ball, but it looked like they wouldn’t do much with it. At one point, James dished the ball to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in the paint, but the 28-year-old shooting guard found himself surrounded by Golden State’s defense.

With nowhere to go, Caldwell-Pope abandoned the layup and gave the ball back. With the shooting clock winding down, James launched a three and hit nothing but the bottom of the net to make it 103-100.

The Warriors tried to respond quickly, but the Lakers tightened up their defense and managed to come up with a win.

James finished the game with a triple-double, scoring 22 points to go with 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Davis had 25 points and 12 boards, while Dennis Schroeder, Alex Caruso, and Caldwell-Pope also achieved double digits scoring.

Golden State was led by Stephen Curry as expected, with this year’s MVP candidate scoring 37 points. Andrew Wiggins had 21 points, and Kent Bazemore and Jordan Poole each scored 10 apiece.

The win propelled the Lakers to the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference playoffs and will see them play the No. 2-seeded Phoenix Suns in the first round. The Warriors, on the other hand, will look to punch their playoff ticket in an elimination game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Los Angeles Lakers will kick off their postseason facing this year’s NBA MVP. That is, at least, according to Lakers superstar LeBron James.

James had a chat with reporters on Sunday night in which he discussed the Lakers’ upcoming play-in game against the Golden State Warriors. He said that his team has to be on “its best” as they will be playing against the “MVP of our league in Steph Curry.”

“I mean, just look at what he’s done this year. I don’t know anything else if you’re looking for an MVP. If Steph is not on Golden State’s team, what are we looking at?”, said James. He also added that Curry had “the best season all year.”

The Lakers and Warriors will meet on Wednesday, with the winner of the contest locking the No. 7 seed for the playoffs. The loser will face either the San Antonio Spurs or Memphis Grizzlies to determine the No. 8 seed.

Steph Curry was the only bright spot on a Warriors team that battled injuries for the better part of the season. Curry had arguably his best statistical season as a pro, averaging a career-high 32 points and winning the NBA’s scoring title for the second time in his career. He also added 5.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists while shooting 42.1 percent from the three-point line.

Still, Curry most likely won’t get much consideration for his third MVP award due to the Warriors’ poor record. Golden State finished eighth in the Western Conference standings with a 39-33 record for the season.

The Most Valuable Player award for the 2020-21 NBA season will most likely go to either the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic or the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid. If this happens, either of them will become the first center to get the honors since Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal.
