The LA Clippers managed to spoil the Los Angeles Lakers’ celebration party on Wednesday night by beating them 116-109 to start the 2020-21 season.

Before the game tipped off, the Lakers marked the last season’s title-winning season by awarding the team with rings to commemorate their success.

The ceremony was filled with heartwarming moments, as the medical workers, players’ families, NBA commissioner Adam Silver, and even some celebrities took part in the festivities.

The Lakers’ players, however, couldn’t enjoy the moment for too long—because it was time to focus on the new season and play the Clippers. But it wasn’t the greatest of starts.

Following a disappointing playoff exit in 2019-20, the Clippers came to Staples Center to play, and it showed from the very start. They dominated the Lakers in the first quarter, outscoring them by 20 points.

The Lakers managed to bounce back in the second, finding a rhythm and managing to cut the Clippers lead to just two before the half.

However, the Clippers managed to pull ahead once again in the third quarter, creating a double-digit lead to enter the final period thanks to some big moments from Paul George.

The Lakers tried to make another run in the last 12 minutes but couldn’t contain the Clippers’ offense enough to make it close.

The Clippers were led by George, who finished the game with 33 points, including 26 in the second half. Kawhi Leonard added 26 points, three assists, and two steals.

LeBron James starred for the Lakers on the other side with 22 points, while Anthony Davis finished the night with 18 points and seven boards.

The Lakers are hosting Dallas Mavericks next while the Clippers travel to Denver to face the Nuggets.

After being away for more than three months, the NBA finally returned to action. The season resume was highlighted with an LA duel, in which the Lakers topped the Clippers 103-101 in a possible preview of Western Conference Finals.

Lakers opened the game ferociously, finishing the first half with 12 points to spare. However, the Clippers won the following two quarters to get back in the game, and it was obvious we are in for a thriller.

And a thriller it was, as the two teams were tied 101-101 with around 20 seconds left in the game. Lakers’ superstar LeBron James took the responsibility to seal the game but needed two tries to make that happen. His first shot bounced off the rim, but he collected the miss and put the ball in the hole to give his team a win.

The Lakers were led by forward Anthony Davis, who scored 34 points while having eight rebounds and four assists. James followed with an all-around performance, scoring 16 points, dishing seven assists, and collecting 11 boards, while Kyle Kuzma and Dion Waiters added 16 points and 11 points, respectively.

“It felt like a real game to me, two teams battling … Can’t complain for the first game,” said Davis after the game.

Paul George with 30 points and Kawhi Leonard with 28 points were standouts for Clippers.  

“It was a good game,” said Leonard. “Still had fun out there. It was great to be back on the floor.”

Los Angeles Lakers’ 111-106 loss to LA Clippers on Wednesday night is proving to be even more costly for Frank Vogel’s team. The Lakers not only picked up their fourth straight loss, but they also might have lost star LeBron James for an extended period.

According to reports, James aggravated a groin injury, which caused him to miss the team’s previous game against Clippers and is facing a yet unspecified break. The 34-year-old superstar could reportedly miss several of Lakers’ upcoming games while recovering.

Speaking with media after the game, in which he had 23 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists, James revealed that he aggravated the injury during a first-quarter collision with Clippers’ guard Patrick Beverley.

“I felt healthy going into the game,” said James. “I got kneed in the groin taking a charge from Pat Bev, and it kind of set me right back to where I was five days ago.”

Sources close to the organization say that the team’s coaching staff is urging LeBron James to take a longer break in order to recover fully. James had a torn left groin last season, causing him to miss 17 consecutive games, which was most in his career. The present groin injury, however, isn’t considered to be serious like that.

James is currently averaging 25.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 10.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

Although we had a chance to see Ball in the NBA Summer League and preseason games, the game against the Los Angeles Clippers was his first NBA regular season game. Patrick Beverley of the Clippers made sure that Ball remembers his debut.

After just a few minutes into the game, Beverley showed he won’t be easy for the rookie. He played aggressive defense on him, and picked Ball up on the full court, never backing down through the entire game. Ball didn’t cope well with Beverley’s pressure while committing few turnovers and allowing Beverley to strip him of the ball at one point. Ball ended his first regular season Lakers game on a disappointing note. The Lakers lost the game 108-92, with Ball scoring just 3 points while shooting 1-6 from the field. He added 4 assists and 8 rebounds. On the other hand, Beverley scored 10 points, alongside 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

Although Beverley is an exceptional defender, who plays hard each time, he might have an extra motivation to spoil Ball’s debut. Lonzo’s father LaVar Ball praised his son before he was even drafted, and said at one point that Ball is “better than Stephen Curry”. According to Stephen A. Smith from the ESPN’s first take, this and other LaVar Ball’s statements about his son caused NBA players to have a special motive when they face Lonzo Ball. Even Beverly made that a similar comment after the game.

“I just had to set the tone,” – Beverley said after the game. “I told him after the game, due to all the riff-raff that his dad brings that he is going to get a lot of people coming at him. He has to be ready for that, and I let him know after the game. But what a better way to start than 94 feet guarding him.”

When asked about his debut, Lonzo Ball admitted he wasn’t on the highest level by saying: “We got blown out, so I didn’t play too well.“
