The LA Kings will keep their franchise legend and current captain Anze Kopitar around for a while longer. The team announced that Kopitar inked a new two-year deal that now keeps him under contract through the 2025-26 NHL season.

Kopitar had one year remaining on his eight-year, $80 million contract he signed back in 2016. He is set to receive an additional $14 million with the new extension.

Kopitar and defenseman Drew Doughty are the only two players from 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup-winning teams still playing with the Kings. After inking the extension, Kopitar hopes that he will add more Stanley Cup wins in LA to his resume.

“Los Angeles has become home for me and my family, and I’m excited to extend my career here,” Kopitar said after the news was made official. “I’ve been with this organization through it all, and I know our group is close to achieving something special. I look forward to helping us reach that next level and achieving the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup again.”

Anze Kopitar spent all of his 17 years in NHL with the Kings. He played 1,292 regular season games for the franchise and has 1,141 points (393 goals and 748 assists). Kopitar was named NHL All-Star five times in his career and has won Frank J. Selke Trophy twice.

The Los Angeles Kings announced on Wednesday that talented defenseman Mikey Anderson would remain with the franchise for the foreseeable future. Anderson inked an eight-year contract extension that will keep him in LA through the 2030-31 season.

According to the official Kings’ announcement, Anderson will earn $4.1 million on average once the extension kicks in next season. As part of the $32.8 million-worth deal, he is also getting a 10-team no-trade clause, which will come into effect in 2026-27. The 23-year-old player entered the current campaign on a one-year, $1 million deal he inked as a restricted free agent in September.

“We’re excited to have a player of Mikey Anderson’s caliber signed to the Kings long-term,” said Kings general manager Rob Blake in a team-released statement. “Mikey has not only developed into a trusted, shutdown player on the ice, but a well-respected individual in the room that we envision continuing to grow into our leadership core.”

Mikey Anderson entered the league as a 103rd overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Kings. He had to wait until the 2019-20 season to make his NHL debut, but has since established himself as one of the team’s most dependable players.

Anderson might not fill the box score in terms of goals and assists, contributing 33 points in 172 games,  but he brings immense value by efficiently executing defensive tasks. He is considered one of the best in the league in clearing and covering space while also successfully stopping the opponent’s most dangerous players.

Ahead of the last season, LA Kings gave goalie Cal Petersen a significant extension to tie him to the franchise 2024/25. Now, just a bit over a year later, the Kings are sending Petersen to AHL.

Petersen had a rough stretch to start the 2022-23 NHL campaign, which included allowing four goals from the 16 shots he faced during a recent overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken. As a result, the Kings decided to put him on waivers.

As expected, no one wanted Petersen’s three-year, $15 million on their hands, causing him to clear waivers and allow the Kings to send him to their AHL affiliate Ontario Reign.

Speaking about the decision, Kings’ general manager Rob Blake said that the idea is to give Petersen as much game time as possible in AHL. The coaching staff hopes this will get him in form and build his confidence.

“I think the idea here is Cal can go down and get that structure that we believe in, and come back up and help us. I mean, that’s as simple as it gets,” Blake said.

Kings signed Cal Petersen on a big-time extension after he had a 2.89 goals-against average and .911 save percentage in 35 games in 2020-21. The franchise hoped he could be their goalkeeper of the future, but that is now in big doubt as he only has a 3.75 goals-against average and .868 save percentage in 10 games he played this season.

Even if the NHL season resumes in the next couple of months, Los Angeles Kings’ center Jeff Carter won’t be on the ice. According to Kings’ general manager Rob Blake, Carter remains sidelined with the core injury and is still a long way from returning to action.

Carter, who hasn’t played since mid-February, couldn’t get the proper treatment in time due to coronavirus pandemic lockdown and is forced to rehab at home. This complicates his recovery, and Kings are obviously not willing to take any chances with the 38-year-old veteran.

“Part of the issue is he needs to travel to see a certain specialist to get further diagnosis, and nothing can be taking place right now,” said Blake for Kings’ official website. “He’s continuing a rehab program from home. He hasn’t been around the practice rink in that aspect, but I wouldn’t expect him to be able to play if our season were to start in the next couple of months.”

There’s really no incentive for Los Angeles Kings to play Jeff Carter as the team finds itself far from playoff contention and sits on the bottom of Pacific Division with 29 – 35 – 6 record. But, Carter sitting out could also mean that he played his last game in Kings’ jersey.

Kings are in rebuilding mode and are reportedly considering trading Carter in order to make space for some of their younger players. Also, the franchise would benefit from getting his contract off their books as he is owed around $10.5 million in the next two years.

Carter, who has two Stanley Cups with Kings, played 60 games this season, contributing with 17 goals and 10 assists for a total of 27 points.
