Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving has missed four straight games with knee soreness in March, and it looks like he won’t be back on the court anytime soon. The Celtics issued a statement on their official site on Friday which said that Irving “will tomorrow undergo a minimally invasive procedure to alleviate irritation in his left knee.” The team did not give a timeline for Irving’s return saying that “information will be provided following tomorrow’s procedure.”

Irving first noticed that his knee is flared on March 3, during the loss to the Houston Rockets. He then had to sit out the second half of the game against the Indiana Pacers, before being sidelined. The Boston Celtics are currently on a four-game road trip that begins on Friday in Portland against the Blazers.

Since the Celtics will almost certainly be the number two seed in the Eastern Conference, Irving said to the reporters that he wants to take a longer rest, in hopes that his knee will get better. When that didn’t happen, the 26-year-old point guard decided to ask for a second opinion.

The left knee in which Kyrie Irving feels soreness in the same he injured during the 2015 Finals. He had to undergo a kneecap surgery then and was sidelined for more than three months. This won’t be the same kind of surgery, but still, it is hard to see Irving coming back before the playoffs.

Boston Celtics are currently also without Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart. Smart won’t return for at least six weeks, while Brown could get back for the weekend and play in the game against the Sacramento Kings.

You could argue that they got best of the situation, being secured for both the present and the future. In Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder, they got players who can help the team right away, making them almost equally equipped for the title hunt as they were with Kyrie. Isaiah Thomas had an excellent season being an MVP contender while with Jae Crowder Cavs finally got a good 3-point shooter who can defend. On the other hand, Ante Zizic is a promising young talent, and the Nets 2018 pick will most certainly end up in the lottery, allowing them to draft another talented player next year. Even if LeBron James bails on Cleveland, and decides not to extend his contract, they will still have something to look forward in the future.

Celtics finally decided to gamble and not play the waiting game like before. They were reluctant to part with their many assets in the past, missing out on Paul George and Jimmy Butler. Now, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge pulled the trigger and decided that Kyrie Irving is the player that could help them get on the top and finally battle Cleveland Cavaliers for the place in the NBA Finals. One thing is for sure, we are in for another exciting NBA season.

League sources told ESPN that Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics engaged in serious trade talks which would be centered on Kyrie Irving. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski shared the news on his Twitter account.
