The Texas Rangers made one of their first significant moves of the offseason on Wednesday, agreeing to a deal with free-agent starting pitcher Kyle Gibson on a three-year deal.

The Rangers, who are committed to putting together a competitive year in their first season at Globe Life Field, added a veteran starting pitcher with ample experience at a cost that seems quite reasonable.

Gibson spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Minnesota Twins before hitting the free-agent market this offseason. He compiled a 67-68 record in 193 games with the AL Central club with a 4.52 ERA.

In 2019, he struggled a bit with the long ball and allowed hits with runners on base despite putting up the best strikeout numbers of his career.

Gibson finished last season with a 13-7 record and a 4.84 ERA, recording 160 strikeouts in 160 innings pitched.

The Rangers are betting on the 32-year-old’s strikeout ability and veteran experience to serve as a key piece in their rotation over the next few seasons. His durability was also a plus for Texas, as he has suffered no major injuries during his Major League career.

He will make his debut for the team next spring.
