Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury could return to the NFL next season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kingsbury is one of the candidates for the position of offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Schefter reports that Kingsbury will soon meet with the Bears’ brass for an interview. The 44-year-old coach spent the 2023 season in college football, serving as senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach with USC Trojans.

The Bears currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could end up using it on USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams, who is considered the best player in the class. Having a familiar figure as his offensive coordinator would likely help Williams be more comfortable with the transition to the NFL, which is why hiring Kingsbury makes sense for Chicago.

Kingsbury coached the Cardinals for four seasons, posting a 28-37-1 record. He led the franchise to the playoffs in 2021, where they were eliminated in the NFC Wild Card Game by the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

After another disappointing campaign in 2023, which saw them finish 7-10 and have one of the worst passing offenses, the Bears decided to overhaul their offensive coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was fired earlier in January, while four additional staff members on the offensive side of the ball left the franchise as well.

Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is set to join USC’s staff, sources revealed to ESPN on Monday. Kingsbury’s appointment is expected to be made final in the coming weeks.

USC coach Lincoln Riley will provide Kingsbury with a Trojans reunion, with the ex-Cardinals coach formerly acting as USC’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December 2018.

Kingsbury left the team a month later to become the Cardinals’ head coach, where he remained for four years. With a record of 28-37-1 during his four seasons as head coach, Kingsbury led the Cardinals to the playoffs once.

“Lincoln has been looking for ways to explore getting better,” a source close to the situation commented. “Lincoln is 100 percent focused on doing everything he can to make his team better, and this is an example of it.”

As a quarterbacks coach, Kingsbury has trained top NFL stars such as Patrick Mahomes when he was at Texas Tech, Case Keenum during his time at Houston, and Johnny Manziel during his Heisman Trophy season in 2012 at Texas A&M.

The Houston Texans’ new head coach DeMeco Ryans is wasting no time sorting out his coaching staff. After hiring Matt Burke to be his new defensive coordinator, Ryans is also close to sorting out the offensive coordinator position.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Ryans’ first choice is former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Reportedly, Kingsbury is interested in making a swift return to NFL after being fired by the Cardinals last month and has already traveled to Houston to meet with Texans’ brass.

If Kingsbury ends up taking the job, the Texans could have two former Cardinals employees coordinating both sides of the ball. Burke spent the 2022 season on Kingsbury’s staff, serving as defensive line coach.

Kliff Kingsbury rose to prominence as a bright offensive mind during his time as a head coach of Texas Tech. This reputation helped him land the job as the Cardinals’ head coach in 2019, with the franchise hoping he could get the best out of quarterback Kyler Murray.

After going 13-18-1 in his first two years in Arizona, Kingsbury led the Cardinals to an 11-6 record in 2021. But despite a strong regular season, the team disappointed in the playoffs and got eliminated in the Wild Card game after a blowout 11-34 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cardinals hoped they can make a deeper run in 2022, but inconsistencies and a series of injuries resulted in the worst campaign of Kingsbury’s tenure. The team finished 4-13, prompting the ownership to fire Kingsbury despite handing him a contract extension the year before.

Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure as the head coach of Texas Tech Red Raiders has come to an end after he finished the season with a losing record for the third consecutive time. The university’s decision to part ways with Kingsbury was confirmed Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt.

I’d like to thank Kliff Kingsbury for his six years of dedication leading our football program,” – said Hocutt in a statement. “He’s worked very hard and represented us in a first-class manner.

In a statement issued on Monday, Kingsbury said  that it has been his “honor” coaching the school and that his only regret is not bringing Texas Tech football program to the level “this University and community deserves.”

He leaves the program with 35–40 record in six years.

Kliff Kingsbury served as a quarterback for Texas Tech Red Raiders from 1998 to 2002, before being selected in the sixth round of 2003 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. After not getting much playing time in NFL, he went on to play in NFL Europe and Canadian Football League before retiring in 2007.

Kingsbury started his coaching career in 2008 with the University of Houston, where he served on several positions before joining Texas A&M as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2012. After just one year with the Aggies, he was named the head coach of Texas Tech football program.

Reportedly the main candidates for the vacant position of the Red Raiders’ HC are Troy University’s Neal Brown and North Texas’ Seth Littrell. Both coaches previously served as assistants at Texas Tech. Clemson’s defensive coordinator Brent Venables might also be in the mix according to ESPN.
