Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is back in the NFL. The Washington Commanders announced over the weekend that Kingsbury joined the franchise as offensive coordinator under new head coach Dan Quinn.

Kingsbury has been linked with several OC jobs across the league in recent weeks. He was close to becoming the new offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders at one point but ended up withdrawing his name from consideration after the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on the contract.

Now, Kingsbury will be tasked with leading the Commanders’ offense on a reported three-year deal.

The Commanders also filled the position of defensive coordinator, bringing in Dallas Cowboys’ secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr.

Kliff Kingsbury previously served as the head coach of the Cardinals between 2019 and 2022. In his four years with the franchise, Kingsbury had a 28-37-1 record, leading Arizona to playoffs in the 2021 season.

After being fired by the Cardinals following the 2022 campaign, Kingsbury served as the senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach with USC.

Kingsbury will now take on the challenge of improving Commanders’ offense and is expected to feature a new signal-caller next season. Washington currently owns the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and is expected to take one of the top quarterback prospects, including USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury could return to the NFL next season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kingsbury is one of the candidates for the position of offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Schefter reports that Kingsbury will soon meet with the Bears’ brass for an interview. The 44-year-old coach spent the 2023 season in college football, serving as senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach with USC Trojans.

The Bears currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could end up using it on USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams, who is considered the best player in the class. Having a familiar figure as his offensive coordinator would likely help Williams be more comfortable with the transition to the NFL, which is why hiring Kingsbury makes sense for Chicago.

Kingsbury coached the Cardinals for four seasons, posting a 28-37-1 record. He led the franchise to the playoffs in 2021, where they were eliminated in the NFC Wild Card Game by the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

After another disappointing campaign in 2023, which saw them finish 7-10 and have one of the worst passing offenses, the Bears decided to overhaul their offensive coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was fired earlier in January, while four additional staff members on the offensive side of the ball left the franchise as well.

Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is set to join USC’s staff, sources revealed to ESPN on Monday. Kingsbury’s appointment is expected to be made final in the coming weeks.

USC coach Lincoln Riley will provide Kingsbury with a Trojans reunion, with the ex-Cardinals coach formerly acting as USC’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December 2018.

Kingsbury left the team a month later to become the Cardinals’ head coach, where he remained for four years. With a record of 28-37-1 during his four seasons as head coach, Kingsbury led the Cardinals to the playoffs once.

“Lincoln has been looking for ways to explore getting better,” a source close to the situation commented. “Lincoln is 100 percent focused on doing everything he can to make his team better, and this is an example of it.”

As a quarterbacks coach, Kingsbury has trained top NFL stars such as Patrick Mahomes when he was at Texas Tech, Case Keenum during his time at Houston, and Johnny Manziel during his Heisman Trophy season in 2012 at Texas A&M.

The Houston Texans’ new head coach DeMeco Ryans is wasting no time sorting out his coaching staff. After hiring Matt Burke to be his new defensive coordinator, Ryans is also close to sorting out the offensive coordinator position.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Ryans’ first choice is former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Reportedly, Kingsbury is interested in making a swift return to NFL after being fired by the Cardinals last month and has already traveled to Houston to meet with Texans’ brass.

If Kingsbury ends up taking the job, the Texans could have two former Cardinals employees coordinating both sides of the ball. Burke spent the 2022 season on Kingsbury’s staff, serving as defensive line coach.

Kliff Kingsbury rose to prominence as a bright offensive mind during his time as a head coach of Texas Tech. This reputation helped him land the job as the Cardinals’ head coach in 2019, with the franchise hoping he could get the best out of quarterback Kyler Murray.

After going 13-18-1 in his first two years in Arizona, Kingsbury led the Cardinals to an 11-6 record in 2021. But despite a strong regular season, the team disappointed in the playoffs and got eliminated in the Wild Card game after a blowout 11-34 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cardinals hoped they can make a deeper run in 2022, but inconsistencies and a series of injuries resulted in the worst campaign of Kingsbury’s tenure. The team finished 4-13, prompting the ownership to fire Kingsbury despite handing him a contract extension the year before.

It looks like Arizona Cardinals’ head coach Kliff Kingsbury found a great way to connect with his younger players. While talking with reporters on Tuesday at the Annual League Meeting, Kingsbury said he would allow his players “phone breaks” during meetings as a way to keep their attention.

“Cell phone breaks, that’s what it is now,” – said Kingsbury. “They’re itching to get to those things.”

This is a method that the 39-year-old coach used during his time at Texas Tech, and it seems like it served him well.

“I think coming from the college ranks, obviously, those young men, it’s got to be quick hitters,” – he added. “Twenty minutes at a time, give them a break and get them back in. We want to make sure when we have them, they’re focused and they’re locked in, and we’re maximizing that time. So, if we’ve got to split it up or have shorter meetings, that’s what we do.”

You have to give it to Kliff Kingsbury for thinking out of the box and trying to find the best way to own the locker room in his first year as a Cardinals’ coach. We’ll have to wait and see, however, whether that will lead to wins and better record.
