The Golden State Warriors and their star shooting guard Klay Thompson have been engaged in contract extension talks for some quite now. However, it appears that the two sides are still not close to getting a deal done.

According to ESPN’s NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Thompson and the Warriors made “no progress” in their negotiations. Wojnarowski reports that the two sides are “still apart on years and money,” adding that there is a real possibility Thompson will hit the free agency next summer.

The Warriors seem determined to keep their core of Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green together in hopes of making another NBA title run. But while they successfully locked Curry and Green on long-term deals, they haven’t been able to get on the same page with Thompson.

Thompson is in the last year of his contract and will earn $43.2 million in 2023-24. Previous reports indicated that the 33-year-old player is looking for a max extension, something that the Warriors are reluctant to give him, considering his age and their huge payroll.

Klay Thompson was a key member of the Warriors’ teams that made six NBA Finals appearances and won four NBA titles since 2015. After missing the entire 2021-22 campaign due to a knee injury, Thompson returned to his usual level last season. In 69 games in 2022-23, he averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 41.2% for three.

The Golden State Warriors issued an update about the health status of All-Star guard Klay Thompson, who is currently recovering from an Achilles injury. According to the team’s post on Twitter, Thompson “made good progress” in the rehab process and is expected to return at some point in the 2021-22 NBA season.

The Warriors followed this up with another tweet, saying that there’s still no timetable for Thompson’s return, which will be based “on his continued progress”. The 31-year-old star is expected to attend training camp, which starts in late September, where he’ll take part “in various controlled drills.”

Previous reports, including one from ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, said that Golden State is optimistic that Thompson returns before the end of 2021 and hopes to have him back on the floor around Christmas.

Klay Thompson hasn’t played basketball since the 2019 NBA Finals when he suffered a torn ACL in Game 6 against the Toronto Raptors. He underwent surgery to repair the damage during the summer and missed the 2019-20 season as a result.

Thompson successfully recovered from the ACL injury by September 2020 and was set to be ready for the 2020-21 NBA season. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn Achilles during a pickup game in November and was forced to sit out another season.

The Warriors were not able to stay competitive without Thompson, failing to make the playoffs since he got injured. After finishing at No. 15 in the Western Conference in 2019-20, they improved to No. 9 last season. Still, they ended up being eliminated from the postseason conversation after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Play-in Tournament.
