Cleveland Indians have decided to address the catching deficiency that was created after they recently traded their All-Star catcher Yan Gomes and top prospect Francisco Mejia. Indians announced on Sunday that they have acquired catcher Kevin Plawecki from the New York Mets, giving up pitcher Walker Lockett and infielder Sam Haggerty in exchange.

“We’re excited to add Kevin to our major league catching mix,” – said Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti. “The guy’s earned a reputation as a really good teammate, a good receiver and leads a pitching staff really well. We also believe there’s some upside with him offensively. We like his ingredients to hit and think he can be a contributing member of our major league team.”

Kevin Plawecki was drafted 35th overall by the Mets in 2012 draft. He earned his MLB debut in 2015 and was a solid performer during his four years in New York. Plawecki played 79 games in 2018, batting .210 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. He is expected to be a backup for Roberto Perez in Cleveland.

After starting his professional career with the San Diego Padres, Walker Lockett was traded to the Cleveland Indians in November 2018. His career stats include a 0-3 record with 9.60 ERA and 12 strikeouts. Sam Haggerty, on the other hand, is still to make his MLB debut.
