The Cleveland Cavaliers shared an optimistic update about the recovery of their All-Star forward Kevin Love. According to the team’s announcement, which was shared on Wednesday, Love resumed individual basketball activities this week and should soon return to team practices.

The Cavs added that Love’s condition will be assessed on a daily basis, and his participation in full-contact drills will depend on this. If everything goes well, the next step for a 32-year-old star should be playing NBA games.

Love hasn’t played since late December after aggravating a right-calf strain in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He made two appearances in 2020-21 and is averaging 9.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.5 points per game.

Despite Love’s absence, Cleveland has played really well this season. The young roster, led by Colin Sexton and Darius Garland, is hovering around .500 and has a 10-12 record. This is enough for No. 7 in the Eastern Conference at the moment.

With Kevin Love back, the Cavs should become instantly better and might have a legitimate chance to challenge for the playoffs. Cleveland missed the postseason in both of the previous two seasons while having the worst and second-to-worst records in the East, respectively.

Cleveland Cavaliers star power forward Kevin Love is back on the sidelines once again. Love aggravated an existing calf injury in a 118-94 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday and will be out for three to four weeks while recovering.

The Cavaliers confirmed the news after Love underwent an MRI test on Tuesday. According to the team’s statement, he will begin the rehab process immediately, and his status will be updated once he is ready to return to action.

Love initially got injured during the preseason, causing him to miss the Cavs’ season opener against the Charlotte Hornets. The 32-year-old veteran made his return in the team’s second game, putting up 15 points, nine rebounds, and three assists against the Detroit Pistons.

Losing an important player like Love is a tough blow to the Cavs, especially after a promising start to the season. Cleveland achieved a 3-0 start, hinting at a possible turnaround for a franchise that finished at the bottom of the East in the past two seasons.

With Love out, the Cavs will most likely turn to Larry Nance Jr. as the starter at the power forward position. Nance played some great all-around basketball since the new season started, averaging 8.7 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.

Cleveland Cavaliers could really use the help of their All-Star forward Kevin Love, but the 30-year-old is still a long way from returning to court.

Love, who is still recovering from a foot surgery he underwent in November, recently told reporters that he is still “weeks away” from doing on-court work and could be out until after the All-Star break in February.

“I don’t know,” – Love said when asked about his return. “It’s really tough for me to say because I don’t know how my foot is going to respond. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.”

Although he doesn’t know when he will be back, Love knows that he doesn’t want to sit out the entire season.

“That’s never really been the thought process–at least for me,” – he added. “I want to play. I want to be out there with those guys. I feel like I would be letting my teammates down, and letting (coach) L.D. (Larry Drew) and the coaching staff down if I didn’t get out there and play and get out there and play as soon as I could — so long as I’m healthy.”

After LeBron James left Cleveland to join the Los Angeles Lakers, Kevin Love decided to remain with the franchise and sign a four-year, $120 million contract extension. He supposed to be a cornerstone for a Cavs’ team that had hopes of getting back to the playoffs even with James not being around. Still, after Love went down with the injury, the Cavaliers started playing atrociously, and currently find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with 8-32 record, which is the worst in the NBA.

Love played only four games this season, averaging 19.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.

The problems keep piling up for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Besides playing horrendously in January, they have now lost their second best player on the team. Kevin Love fractured his left hand in the 125-114 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday and will likely be out for six to eight weeks.

The injury occurred few minutes into the first quarter of the game when he made contact with Pistons’ Anthony Tolliver trying to catch a pass from Jeff Green under the basket. He tried to stay on the court for a few more possessions but had to leave the game and head straight to the locker room. The Cavs will provide further information about his injury after additional examination, while Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports that “need for surgery is still uncertain.” It is worth noting that Love already had a surgery on his left hand in 2009.

It’s just unfortunate for our team,” – said LeBron James after the game. “Obviously with everything [that’s] been going on as of late with our ballclub, just trying to figure out how we’re going to play every night, different lineups and getting everybody into the flow, we don’t need to have Kev go out like that. He’s going to be out for quite a while — maybe two months — so it’s just tough.

So far in the season, Kevin Love has been averaging 17.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

With Love out, the Cavs will have to find a way to overturn their longs stretch of bad games and it will be on newcomers Jae Crowder and Isaiah Thomas to step up their game. Even before Love got injured, the Cavs were looking for a trade to boost their roster, and now they might be even more active on that field.

Cleveland Cavaliers could really use the help of their All-Star forward Kevin Love, but the 30-year-old is still a long way from returning to court.
