It appears that Kevin Durant made his free agency decision earlier than he needed to. According to Durant, he knew he was leaving the Golden State Warriors midway through the past NBA season.

Durant, who is currently recovering from an Achilles injury, discussed his free agency decision during his recent appearance on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s All the Smoke podcast.

“I knew just about the halfway point through the year,” Durant admitted. “I could feel, you know, the separation between the two. Everybody was just waiting on me to make a decision on free agency — coaches, to my teammates, to the media — it’s like January, and I’m like, ‘Yo, I’m just trying to hoop.”

Still, despite his decision, Durant didn’t change his approach and was hoping he could help Golden State win another championship.

“But I was really focused on the end goal, which was to win the third championship in a row,” he added.

Kevin Durant didn’t manage to reach this goal, as he suffered an Achilles tear in the playoffs, which sidelined him for this season. Despite this, Durant got a max-contract offer from the Brooklyn Nets, where he teamed up with Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan.

Durant won two consecutive NBA titles with the Warriors, while also being the NBA Finals MVP both times. He averaged 26.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game last season.

Most NBA fans would like to see Golden State Warriors’ dynasty come to an end and it seems like Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady shares their opinion. During his recent appearance on ESPN’s The Jump, McGrady discussed the possibility of Kevin Durant leaving the Warriors in the offseason, and said that this scenario would be “great” for the league.

“[That would be] great for the league,” – said McGrady, who currently works as an NBA analyst at ESPN. “Although I love seeing these guys play on the big stage every year, I think we just need some more parity … Kevin Durant just completely changed everything when he went there and made it not fair for the league.”

According to McGrady, Durant leaving wouldn’t just bring more parity to the league, but would also help another team to become relevant.

“I would love for KD to spread the love around … so a team like the New York Knicks can come back in the fold and be competitive in the Eastern Conference,” – he added. “Like, how awesome would that be? KD joins another player or two and make New York exciting again.”

Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in 2016, and since then, they became an unstoppable team that doesn’t have a real opponent in the NBA. Still, that could change in the summer, since both Durant and Klay Thompson are up for contract extension. And while Thompson is expected to stay, most analysts predict that Durant will decide to go somewhere else especially if Golden State manages to get a three-peat this year.

Durant played 48 games this season, and currently averages 27.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.2 blocks per game.

The league sources have revealed to ESPN that Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant will opt-out of his contract this summer and become an unrestricted agent. Durant signed a two-year contract with the team in the summer, which had player option clause for the 2018-19 season.

This, however, doesn’t mean that the 2017 NBA Finals MVP will look at other offers. Durant will reconstruct his deal with the Warriors, which saw him getting paid a lot less than he is worth. The 29-year-old accepted approximately $26 million per year, which is $10 million less than he would earn with a max-salary contract.

Thanks to this kind of approach from Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors were able to retain some of their key bench players on the roster like point guard Shaun Livingston and forward Andre Iguodala.

His gesture of taking less gave us the ability to be very aggressive in pursuing Shaun and Andre,” – explained Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers in July. “I can pretty much unequivocally say, without it, we’re not looking at the team we have right now. What Kevin did shows who he is, shows what he’s about, and I think it’s clear that that’s winning. Without him doing that it would have been a different roster, and clearly to me, a roster that wasn’t as good as the one we have right now.

Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2016 in a widely controversial move. It turned out to be a good decision for Durant, since he won the NBA Championship in his first season with the team, and was also named the NBA Finals MVP. This season Durant is averaging 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 blocks per game.
