The Los Angeles Lakers have a few roster spots to fill for the 2021-22 NBA season, and they’re casting a wide net to do so. According to The Athletic‘s Jovan Buha, the Lakers are doing their due diligence on forward Kenneth Faried and intend to bring the NBA veteran for a workout at some point this week.

Faried was most recently part of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 2021 NBA Summer League roster but wasn’t offered a contract after.

It is unclear why the Lakers are interested in Faried, especially since he isn’t a great fit for their already old roster. The 31-year-old big man doesn’t exactly come with a reputation of being a good shooter, and shooting is something that the franchise lacks at this point.

Another knock on Faried is the fact that he hasn’t played in the NBA since his brief stint with the Houston Rockets in 2019. He followed that up with an even shorter stay in China, where he played made seven appearances with Zhejiang Lions before having his contract terminated.

Kenneth Faried is best known for his time with the Denver Nuggets, spending seven seasons with the franchise and being a valuable contributor for the better part of his stay. Faried, who also played for the Brooklyn Nets, averaged 11.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game throughout his NBA career.

Faried leaves the Chinese Basketball Association after playing just seven games in which he averaged 17.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. The reason for his departure from China remains unknown, but some reports indicate that the 30-year-old is dealing with an injury.

Faried will now most likely return to the U.S., and to try to land a spot on an NBA team in need of a rotational player.

Since becoming 22nd overall pick in 2011, Faried played with Denver Nuggets, Brooklyn Nets, and Houston Rockets in his career. In 25 games with Rockets last season, he averaged 12.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Carchia also reports that Faried’s contract is worth $4.4 million.

The six-times All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire, who last played in NBA in 2016, recently also chose to play basketball in China, signing with Fujian Sturgeons.

Brooklyn Nets center Kenneth Faried reached a contract buyout with the team on Saturday ahead of joining the Houston Rockets as a free agent before Monday’s ET deadline

The Rockets reportedly plans to add Faried in its lineup immediately since their starting center Clint Capela will be out for several weeks with an injury to his right thumb. The Nets will finalize Faried’s $13.7 million contract by Monday, the deadline date for this trade period.

In Houston, the Rockets are aggressively searching for a trade partner to waiver Carmelo Anthony, the NBA great whose decline in performance has seen him lose his spot in clubs numerous times. Without the Waiver, the Rockets will still have their roster full and no room for Faried.

Considering they want him by Monday as they face the 76ers, Houston must find a way to clear room for him. If a trade for Carmelo is not found, the only option will be to release James Nunnally, the player signed for a trial period of two weeks, five days before his contract expires. Nunnally was signed on January 16th and his contract will expire Jan 25th.

Once he is settled, Faried will hope to get a permanent spot as a center or forward in Houston. He struggled to fit in the Nets team and faces competition from Nene Hilario and Capela in Houston.
