Los Angles Chargers have made a surprising attempt to fix their offensive struggles in 2019. The team announced on Tuesday that they have fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

Chargers have averaged just 19.6 points per game in the first eight weeks, which ranked them 19th in the NFL. They have especially struggled in the running game, having less than 40 rushing yards in the last four games. This hasn’t happened to a team since the Super Bowl era started in 1966.

The lack of productivity on offense caused Chargers to drop to 3-5 record, and Whisenhunt was the one that ended up taking the fall.

“This is not an easy decision and definitely not one that I take lightly,” – said Chargers coach Anthony Lynn following the move. “You win as a team, and you lose as a team. It’s never about just one person. At the end of the day, however, I simply felt a change was needed at this time. I want to thank Ken for his years of service to the Chargers organization and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Chargers still haven’t identified Whisenhunt’s replacement, with Lynn expected to handle the call playing duties in the meantime. Reportedly, quarterbacks coach Shane Steichen is one of the favorites to take the position.

Ken Whisenhunt joined Chargers as OC in 2016. He previously worked as an NFL head coach with Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. Whisenhunt’s career head coaching record stands at 52–73.
