Veteran forward Kelly Oubre Jr. is off the free-agent market. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Oubre is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Oubre, who spent the last season with the Charlotte Hornets, will receive $2 million in 2023-24.

Oubre had a solid campaign in 2022-23, averaging a career-high 20.3 points and adding 5.2 rebounds per game. However, his shooting percentages weren’t all that great, including 31.9% beyond the arc, and he struggled defensively.

Despite his wish to stay in Charlotte, Oubre found himself hitting the free agent market in July after his contract expired. The 27-year-old player initially sought a multi-year deal but found his options limited. This was when the 76ers came in with a minimum-salary offer but a chance to play a significant role on a contender.

This represents a great pickup for the 76ers, giving them a scoring-first wing that can also play some defense when fully engaged. Oubre should be more than a depth piece for Philly and is projected to be a crucial part of the team’s small-ball lineups.

Kelly Oubre Jr. entered the league in 2015 as a mid-first-round pick by the Washington Wizards. He spent three and a half seasons in Washington before embarking on stints with the Phoenix Suns, the Golden State Warriors, and the Charlotte Hornets. Oubre averaged 12.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game through his eight seasons in the NBA.

Kelly Oubre Jr., the Phoenix Suns’ surprising mid-season acquisition, has decided to stick with his current team instead of testing the waters as a restricted free agent.

Oubre has settled on a two-year, $30 million deal with the Suns which will keep him in the valley until 2021.

Phoenix acquired the 23-year-old small forward in a trade with the Washington Wizards in December, in which the Suns sent Trevor Ariza to the Eastern Conference.

Oubre struggled to make an impact in his first two seasons in the nation’s capital, averaging just 15 minutes per game and making a minimal impact off of the bench. During the 2017-18 season, however, he started to contribute more and ended the season averaging 11.8 points per game.

The 2018-19 season, nonetheless, was Oubre’s breakout campaign. The talented shooter averaged 15.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game on 44.5% shooting, the best marks of his career. In addition, he got even better after being shipped to Phoenix, as he averaged 18.9 points per game and worked his way into the team’s starting five.

Oubre underwent thumb surgery in March, which put him out for the season’s final month, but he is expected to be ready to contribute as a member of a young and talented Suns roster next season.
