Legendary American swimmer Katie Ledecky added another gold medal to continue her impressive run at the 2022 World Swimming Championship. After winning the 400-meter freestyle on Saturday, Ledecky was also triumphant in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Monday.

This was Ledecky’s fourth win in the last five1,500-meter freestyle competitions. The only time she wasn’t triumphant at the worlds in this competition was in 2019, when she was forced to withdraw due to illness.

Ledecky was at the front of a 1-2 finish for Team USA as teenager Katie Grimes came 14.74 seconds behind to capture silver. This was the first major medal for Grimes and made her the second-youngest medalist in 1,500-meter freestyle in the history of the World Championships. Only Ledecky was younger when she won gold in 2013.

With another win on her resume, Ledecky now extended her record gold medal tally at World Swimming Championship to 17. She is also the third-most decorated swimmer in the history of the worlds, with 20 medals haul overall. Only her Team USA colleagues Michael Phelps (33) and Ryan Lochte (27) have more.

Ledecky’s run at the medals is far from over as she is scheduled to compete in the 800-meter freestyle and 4×200-meter freestyle relay as well.

The swimming and diving program at the University of Florida just got a lot more attractive for aspiring swimmers. The school announced on Wednesday that seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky will be part of the program’s coaching staff moving forward after she joined the Gators in the role of a volunteer swimming coach.

Besides sharing knowledge with young swimmers, Ledecky will also use her time at the University of Florida to prepare for the upcoming competitions. She previously used her alma-matter at Stanford University as her training base.

“I’ve decided to train at the University of Florida with Coach Anthony Nesty and the outstanding mid-distance and distance training group there,” said Ledecky while announcing the news on Instagram. “I’m looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in the next phase of my swimming career.”

Katie Ledecky is one of the most decorated swimmers in the sport’s history, with 38 medals in all competitions. She owns 10 Olympic medals and has won gold medals on each of the past three Olympics.

She won gold in 800 m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics and followed that up with four gold medals and one silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics saw her winning two gold medals (800 m freestyle and 1500 m freestyle) alongside two silver medals.

The United States continued to add to their medal count at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Monday. This included Katie Ledecky winning the silver in the 400m free and Team USA grabbing the gold in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Ledecky entered the competition as an overwhelming favorite, having won the gold in the 400m free at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She came in strong this time as well, posting her second-best career time (3:57.36), but it wasn’t enough to beat Australia’s Ariarne Titmus in a closely contested showdown. This was Titmus’ first medal in her Olympics debut.

Team USA, on the other hand, didn’t leave any room for doubt in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Caeleb Dressel, who is billed as a successor to the legendary Michael Phelps, propelled Team USA to an early lead in the first leg allowing Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker, and Zach Apple to finish the job with ease.

En route to winning the competition, which also saw Italy and Australia finishing in the second and third place respectively, Team USA posted the third-best time in history with 3:08.97.

In the first three days of the Olympics, the United States managed to win 14 medals, trailing only China’s coup of 15. The U.S. has seven golds, tied with Japan for most so far, alongside three silver and four bronze medals.

Most gold medals for Team USA came from shooting competitions so far. Amber English took the gold in women’s skeet on Sunday, breaking the Olympics record in the process. Vincent Hancock won his third gold Olympic medal in men’s skeet, while William Shaner was the best in Men’s 10m air rifle.

Lee Kiefer (fencing), Anastasija Zolotic (taekwondo), and Chase Kalisz (swimming) also added to the count.
