Reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs got themselves a new backup quarterback. According to multiple reports, the Chiefs have signed veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz on a one-year deal.

Wentz spent the first half of the 2023 NFL season unsigned before joining the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 to serve as a backup to Matthew Stafford. Wentz played in two games, including a start in the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers, and finished the campaign with 163 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one TD on the ground.

The Chiefs have been on the market for a new backup quarterback after Blaine Gabbert, who filled the role last year, became a free agent. In Wentz, they now get arguably the most accomplished backup in the QB position in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Carson Wentz entered the NFL in 2016 as the second overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz had a breakthrough season in 2017, putting himself in the NFL MVP conversation before a torn ACL in Week 14 ended his campaign.

Wentz returned to action in 2018 but was never the same player again. After three more underwhelming seasons in Philly, he started for the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders, but was released on both occasions after just one season.

Wentz’s career stats in the NFL include 62.7% pass completion rate, 22,292 passing yards, 153 passing touchdowns, and 67 interceptions.

The Kansas City Chiefs have finally got involved in the free agency. The reigning Super Bowl champions reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with wideout Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Brown is expected to earn $7 million in guaranteed salary in 2024 while being able to get up to $4 million in incentives.

Brown spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He had a lackluster campaign in 2023, which saw him catch 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns. However, part of his struggles was the fact that the Cardinals played most of the season without starting quarterback Kyler Murray.

The Chiefs likely hope that having a star quarterback in Patrick Mahomes will help Brown unlock his full potential, which made him a first-round pick in 2019. Brown had his most productive season as a pro in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens, when he made 91 receptions for 1,008 yards and six TDs.

Kansas City heavily leaned on tight end Travis Kelce and rookie wideout Rashee Rice as their pass-catching options last season. The rest of their receiver corps was underwhelming, which is why the Chiefs made it a priority to upgrade at wide receiver this offseason. Signing Brown isn’t likely the end of it, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Chiefs address the position in the 2024 NFL Draft as well.

In need of salary cap flexibility, the Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly releasing veteran wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling. The move, reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, will save the Chiefs around $12 million in salary cap alongside $2 million in dead money.

The Chiefs will use the savings to try to retain some of their key free agents, including star defensive tackle Chris Jones and standout corner L’Jarius Sneed.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling joined the Chiefs ahead of the 2022 season, signing a three-year, $30 million contract. He had a solid first year in Kansas City but struggled in 2023 with career lows across the board, including 21 catches for 315 yards and one touchdown. However, Valdes-Scantling made a big contribution in the Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers, catching the Chiefs’ first TD of the game.

Valdes-Scantling has a reputation for being a deep threat, averaging 17.0 yards per catch throughout his first six years in the league. Considering there are more than a few wide receiver-needy teams out there, he shouldn’t have a lot of trouble landing a contract with a new team.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, just saw their already deficient WR corps becoming even thinner. They now have just five wideouts on the roster and lack of No.1 wide receiver. The organization is expected to address this issue both through the upcoming draft and free agency.

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions once again after beating the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

The Chiefs secured a 25-22 win by scoring a touchdown in the last seconds of overtime. It marked the franchise’s third Super Bowl trophy in the past five years.

The game started slow, with neither team managing to put points on the board in the first quarter. The 49ers managed to strike first thanks to Jake Moody’s 55-yard field goal before adding to their lead following Christian McCaffrey’s touchdown. The Chiefs also got on the board before the half, converting a 28-yard field goal.

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to start the second half, but the 49ers failed to capitalize on the mistake. This gave Kansas City an opportunity to bounce back, scoring 10 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game.

The fourth quarter saw the 49ers get in front again, with quarterback Brock Purdy finding wideout Jauan Jennings in the endzone. However, Moody failed to convert the extra-point attempt, something that will come back to bite the San Francisco team.

After each team scored a field goal, the Chiefs, facing a 16-19 deficit, got the ball with less than two minutes remaining on the clock. Mahomes and co. advanced to the 49ers’ 11-yard line but had to settle for a field goal to force overtime after running out time.

The 49ers got the first possession in overtime and orchestrated a 66-yard drive to set up a 27-yard field goal.

Upon receiving the ball back, the Chiefs took their time marching down the field. They were at San Francisco’s 3-yard line with 50 seconds remaining in OT but opted against a quick play. Instead, they snapped the ball with six seconds left on the clock, with Mahomes throwing the ball to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who had an open lane to the end zone and scored a touchdown to give his team another Vince Lombardy trophy.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been handed a big blow ahead of the AFC Championship Game clash against the Baltimore Ravens. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chiefs’ All-Pro guard Joe Thuney is dealing with a pectoral muscle injury and is unlikely to play on Sunday.

Thuney suffered the injury in the Divisional Round win over the Buffalo Bills and hasn’t practiced since. The 31-year-old player, however, isn’t losing hope he’ll manage to return in time to face the Ravens, with one source telling Schefter that Thuney “is going to work like crazy to play”.

Thuney played all 17 games in the regular season and had his best year as a pro. He had a pass block win rate of 99.1%, the best in the entire NFL, and committed only two penalties while earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods.

If Thuney isn’t able to play, the Chiefs will likely turn to backup guard Nick Allegretti. According to Kansas City’s head coach Andy Reid, Allegretti, who is in his fifth year in NFL, is already viewed as a starter-caliber player by the organization.

“All the guys look at him like he’s a starter, so everybody’s got confidence that he can come in and do a nice job,” Reid shared.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes lauded his team’s performance following their 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills to book their place in the AFC Championship Game. This is Mahomes’ first true road playoff game since joining the Chiefs.

“Guys took it as a challenge,” Mahomes said in his post-match press conference. “We just came in with the same mindset, that we’re going to come together, put our best foot forward and see if we can come out with a win. And that takes the mentality throughout the week, it takes every single play executing, and we did a great job of that today and were able to score enough to win.”

Mahomes emerged as a standout player for the Chiefs on the night, throwing just 23 passes by securing 215 yards and two touchdowns. With an impressive road record of 8-2 this season, the Chiefs will face the Baltimore Ravens in yet another challenging road game on Sunday as they look to book their place in Super Bowl LIII.

Don’t expect to see Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce hanging up his cleats for good anytime soon. Kelce brushed off rumors about his retirement in a chat with reporters earlier this week, saying that he has no desire to stop playing football.

The chatter about Kelce possibly retiring after this season was sparked by the interview with Vanity Fair in which the 34-year-old player talked about his plans for the future and how he intends to approach his life after he’s done with the NFL. But as it turns out, those plans are further down the road than many thought.

“I have no reason to stop playing football, man. I love it,” Kelce said. “We still have success. Come in with the right mindset, and I just love the challenge that it gives me every single day to try and be at my best. And like I said, I have no desire to stop anytime soon.”

Kelce added that he intends to see out his current contract, which runs through the 2025 season, and that he’s focused on adding more Super Bowl rings to his resume.

Kelce has been having a down year in 2023 by his standards. He finished the regular season with 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns. This was the first time since 2015 that Kelce finished below 1,000 receiving yards.

The Kansas City Chiefs have rewarded superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ patience with a contract restructure that includes $210.6 million guaranteed money.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the reworked contract will see Mahomes earn $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026. This is the most money an NFL player has received in a four-season span.

Mahomes’ agent Chris Cabott told Schefter that Chiefs and his client will revisit the contract once again after the 2026 NFL season wraps up.

Mahomes signed a $503 million, 10-year extension with the Chiefs back in 2020. The agreement was uniquely constructed so the Chiefs could get salary cap flexibility to surround Mahomes with quality players while still recognizing his status as arguably the best player in the game.

While the original extension made Mahomes the highest-paid player in the NFL, he has since slipped to eighth place following a number of big-money extensions that other star quarterbacks received. This prompted the Chiefs to ensure Mahomes doesn’t feel underpaid by bringing his average annual salary to $52.6 million. He still remains under contract with the organization through the 2031 season.

Mahomes won the NFL MVP award last season while guiding the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win. However, he has had a slow start to the 2023 campaign, completing 62.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 531 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.

The Kansas City Chiefs have found a way to get their star defensive tackle Chris Jones back on the field. Jones ended his holdout on Monday after agreeing to a new one-year deal with the franchise.

Jones didn’t report for training camp, electing to hold out as his representatives discussed a new contract with the Chiefs. The 29-year-old was entering the last year of his contract and was set to receive $19.5 million in base salary in 2023. He also missed the Chiefs’ 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jones still has one year left on his deal but will have an opportunity to earn significantly more money this season through bonuses and incentives.

“Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” said Chiefs general manager Brett Veach in a statement. “He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs, and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform.”

Jones had a career year in 2022, finishing the campaign with a career-high 44 tackles and 15.5 sacks. He earned his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod while also being selected First-team All-Pro for the first time in his career.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a big scare on Tuesday when their star tight end Travis Kelce appeared to have suffered a potentially serious knee injury. Fortunately, the injury appears to be a minor one but has put Kelce’s status for the 2023 season opener against the Detroit Lions in doubt.

Kelce got hurt during practice and limped off the field, although he didn’t need any help. The Chiefs immediately sent Kelce to get his knee tested, and the result showed there was no ACL damage.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid said that Kelce is dealing with a “hyperextended knee.” The 33-year-old will undergo further testing on Wednesday after which his status for the Lions’ game will be determined.

When asked about the Chiefs’ plans for the game if Kelce can’t play, Reid said that he expects the “next guy” to step up.

“The next guy steps in, and we roll,” Reid said. “That’s what you do.”

Kansas City has two more tight ends on its roster besides Kelce in third-year player Noah Gray and journeyman Blake Bell. Gray played all 17 games last season, catching 28 passes for 299 yards and a touchdown. Bell, who is in his third year with the Chiefs, was limited to three games in 2022 due to a hip injury.
