The New York Mets didn’t wait long to replace Jacob deGrom after the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner bolted for Texas to sign with the Rangers. Just a few days later, the Mets landed three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander to take deGrom’s spot in the rotation.

According to multiple reports, Verlander inked a two-year, $86.66 million deal with the Mets. There is a club option for $2025 included, with the value coming at $35 million.

Spending this kind of money on a pitcher who will be 40 before the 2023 campaign starts might raise some eyebrows, but it is clear that the Mets are willing to do everything to get over the hump. And Verlander, coming off one of his best seasons in MLB, has the ability to help them do that.

Verlander spent almost two years on the sidelines due to a Tommy John surgery before making a comeback this past season. He delivered an impressive campaign with the Houston Astros in 2022 that saw him post an 18-4 record with a 1.75 ERA and 185 strikeouts. Verlander won Cy Young Award at the end of the season while helping the Astros win a World Series title.

The Mets will pair Verlander with another three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer at the top of their rotation. They are also expected to make more additions to their pitching staff in order to keep the momentum going after the 101-win outing in 2022.

Houston Astros’ All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander decided to use the MLB offseason to address a nagging groin injury. According to Astros’ general manager James Click, Verlander underwent groin surgery and will spend the next six weeks rehabbing.

Verlander first experienced groin issues earlier this year, but expected that physical therapy could resolve the issue. However, after a series of setbacks, the medical team determined that surgery would be the best option going forward. 

“After a recent setback in his rehab, the medical staff recommended that a surgical procedure was necessary,” Click explained.

If everything goes right, Verlander will be just back in time for MLB’s opening day. The start of the 2020 season was recently postponed to May due to coronavirus pandemic.

 Justin Verlander is coming off an impressive season in which he won the AL Cy Young Award for the second time in his career. The 37-year-old finished 2019 with 21-6 record, accompanied by 2.58 ERA and career-high 300 strikeouts.  He also led the league in innings with 223.

Verlander’s good form wasn’t enough to propel Astros to a title, however. Houston advanced to the World Series, where they lost to underdogs Washington Nationals.

Verlander, a likely Hall of Famer and one of the most dominant pitchers in the past decade plus of the sport, claimed the hardware for the first time since his 2011 season with the Detroit Tigers.

The 36-year-old starter became the oldest pitcher to take home the award since the Yankees’ Roger Clemens won the 2004 AL Cy Young trophy at the age of 42.

Verlander was dominant this season for the American League champion Astros, putting together a stellar 21-6 record with a 2.58 ERA and 300 strikeouts. He was the ace and the rock of the Houston pitching staff, one of the most dominant units in the league that helped them to win 106 games in the regular season.

The Virginia native narrowly claimed the award over Astros teammate Gerrit Cole, who finished second in the voting. Verlander and Cole became the first teammates in the history of Major League Baseball to finish #1 and #2 in Cy Young Award voting.

Verlander is expected to take the mound as the powerhouse Astros’ top starter in the 2020 season as well.
