Milwaukee Brewers announced on Tuesday that they have released the first baseman, Justin Smoak. The Brewers decided to make this move after designating Smoak for assignment last week.

Smoak made 33 appearances for Milwaukee this season, his first with the franchise, but struggled to make an impact. He leaves the organization having hit .186 at-bats with five home runs and 15 RBIs.

Brewers previously claimed All-Star Daniel Vogelbach off waivers and intend to install him permanently as the team’s starting first baseman instead of Smoak. Brewers are Vogelbach’s third team this season, with Seattle Mariners and Blue Jays designating him for assignment following his struggles earlier in the season. Still, the 27-year-old Vogelbach kicked off his spell in Milwaukee with promising performances, hitting .385 in the past four games.

Justin Smoak, on the other hand, will probably head to minors now, although there is a possibility he lands a spot on an injury-struck team before the end of the season. Smoak holds a respectable .230 batting average over the course of 11 years in the majors and has 196 homers with 520 RBIs for his career. He also has an All-Star appearance from 2017.
