Quarterback Justin Herbert signed a new five-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, keeping him on until 2029. Sources reported on Tuesday that the deal is worth $262.5 million.

Included in the contract is a no-trade clause along with $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees. While the team itself announced a new multiyear agreement with Herbert, no specific terms were disclosed in the statement.

Based on its average annual value of $52.5 million, this contract makes Herbert the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. He has proven to be a crucial part of the Chargers’ roster since being drafted in 2020, helping the franchise to its first playoff appearance last year since 2018.

During his three seasons in Los Angeles, Herbert completed 1,316 career passes, the most in history for any player’s first three seasons. He has thrown 94 career touchdowns, which includes three straight seasons with 25 or more touchdown passes.

“I sleep better at night knowing we have a franchise quarterback,” Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said of Herbert. “He’s done so much already in his young career, yet we all know there’s still a lot there because of his commitment to the game.”

The Las Vegas Raiders are no longer undefeated in the 2021 NFL season, courtesy of the Los Angeles Chargers and their star quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Chargers entered the Monday Night Football clash against the Raiders as underdogs but ended up dominating the game and shutting down their opponents in three quarters. The Raiders also had just 51 yards of offense in the first half. This set the stage for Herbert, who finished with 222 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Running back Austin Ekeler also had a big night for the Chargers, rushing for 117 yards and one score while adding a receiving TD.

The Raiders bounced back in the third quarter and scored two touchdowns to make it a game. But that ended up being all Las Vegas had to show for, being unable to carry over the momentum to the final period.

There were no standouts amongst the Raiders on Monday night, as quarterback Derek Carr managed just 196 passing yards while the running game seemed inexistent. They had just 48 rushing yards for the night, with Pro Bowler Josh Jakobs managing just 40 yards with his 13 carries.

The Raiders have now dropped to a 3-1 record and find themselves on the third spot in AFC West. The Chargers own the same record but are leading the division thanks to tiebreakers.

Despite another losing season, the Los Angeles Chargers can at least feel good about their quarterback of the future, Justin Herbert.

The rookie quarterback, drafted by the Chargers with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, threw the 28th touchdown of his rookie season in a 19-16 win over the Denver Broncos, breaking the record previously held by Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who threw 27 touchdowns in his 2018 rookie campaign.

Herbert connected with running back Austin Ekeler for a nine-yard touchdown in the second quarter to get his 28th of the season with one game still left to play.

Herbert entered the week with 3,781 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions, completing 66.5% of his passes in what will surely be looked at as a historical rookie season.

Herbert didn’t start the season as the starting quarterback either. He took over for veteran Tyrod Taylor in Week 3 after Taylor suffered a punctured lung in a medical accident after the Chargers’ team doctor inaccurately administered a pain-killing injection to his ribs.

Herbert, the former Oregon star, hasn’t looked back after taking over the starting job, posting great numbers despite the Chargers’ inability to win close games.

It remains to be seen whether Herbert could regress in season two of his career, just as Mayfield did before putting it all together again in season three.

It also remains to be seen whether the Chargers will be retaining coach Anthony Lynn after two straight losing seasons and how a potential coaching change could affect the young quarterback.

The New Orleans Saints were able to rally back from a 20-3 deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 in overtime.

Despite a brilliant performance by LA’s rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who threw for four touchdowns, the Chargers were not able to seal the victory. They fumbled their chance to win in regulation by missing a late field goal attempt, which sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Saints quarterback Drew Brees led the team down the field to set up the game-winning 36-yard field goal by Saint’s kicker Will Lutz.

The Chargers have had their share of heartbreaking losses in the first five games of the season, losing four games by just one score. This continues a trend carrying over from the 2019 season, in which the Chargers lost nine games by just one score.

The good news for Los Angeles is that the guy they drafted to replace Philip Rivers as their franchise quarterback of the future looked great. Herbert became the first rookie ever to throw four touchdown passes in a Monday Night Football game.

Next on the schedule, the 1-4 Chargers will face the winless New York Jets in Week 6, while the 3-2 Saints will look ahead to a divisional matchup with the Carolina Panthers, who are also 3-2 after five weeks.

The Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff has already seen enough from rookie quarterback Justin Herbert to name him the starting quarterback going forward.

This means that the starting job is pretty much his for the rest of the season if he manages to avoid injuries.

The Chargers started the season with veteran Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, expecting Herbert to sit and learn for the year. However, Taylor suffered a free injury right before the teams’ Week 2 game when the team doctor accidentally punctured his lung while trying to give him a pain injection.

In his first “surprise” start, Herbert went 22-of-33 passing for 331 yards, one touchdown pass, and one touchdown run.

Herbert has looked excellent in all three of his starts, throwing for 931 yards and five touchdowns. The former Oregon Duck was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

As for Taylor’s status, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said that he is still recovering and is not yet 100%. However, he said that Taylor could be healthy enough to suit up as the Chargers backup quarterback for their Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, adding that Taylor will still be serving as a team captain.

Many people were puzzled at the start of the Los Angeles Chargers game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday when they saw Justin Herbert starting at quarterback instead of Tyrod Taylor.

It was later stated by the team that Taylor had suffered a freak chest injury before the game and couldn’t play. According to new reports, it appears that one of the team’s doctors accidentally punctured Taylor’s lung while trying to administer an injection.

Taylor apparently had a cracked rib and wanted to play through the injury The doctor was giving him a pain-killing injection before the start of the game, which is when the accident occurred.

The injury is probably going to keep him out of Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers as well.

Rookie quarterback Herbert, who expected to sit and learn from the veteran Taylor this year, found out that he was starting against the Chiefs just seconds before kickoff.

Herbert played admirably and was almost able to squeeze out a win against the defending Super Bowl champions, losing 23-20 on a last-second field goal.

If Herbert has another excellent performance this week against the struggling Panthers defense, it could be an uphill battle for Taylor to reclaim the starting job once he’s healthy again.

Two offseason battles for the starting quarterback position have already been decided.

The Washington Football Team and the Los Angeles Chargers have announced that their starting QBs for the beginning of the 2020 season will be Dwayne Haskins Jr. and Tyrod Taylor, respectively.

Neither of the two decisions comes as much of a surprise. Washington coach Ron Rivera announced on Wednesday that Haskins will be starting Week 1 against the Eagles. Haskins started nine games in his 2019 rookie season, taking over for veteran Case Keenum who was benched due to his poor play.

Haskins didn’t have much competition in training camp this year. It was between him and former Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen and veteran Alex Smith, who is still working his way back to full health from an almost career-ending leg injury he suffered two years ago.

While the Redskins chose to go with the young player, the Chargers are sticking with veteran Tyrod Taylor, in the wake of QB Philip Rivers leaving this offseason after 16 years to join the Indianapolis Colts.

The Chargers drafted their potential future franchise quarterback in this year’s draft, taking Oregon QB Justin Herbert with the 6th overall pick.

But as expected, their plan is to sit Herbert in his first year to allow him to learn from veteran Taylor and get accustomed to the NFL before taking over.

The first six picks of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night saw three quarterbacks selected, with LSU’s Joe Burrow going to the Cincinnati Bengals with the top overall pick and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa being taken by the Miami Dolphins with the fifth selection.

The next quarterback taken, Oregon’s Justin Herbert, went to the Los Angeles Chargers with the sixth overall pick and has the potential to turn his new team’s offense into one of the league’s most deadly attacks.

Pre-draft opinion on Herbert was largely mixed, with some evaluators praising Herbert’s 6’6″, 240 pound frame and top-class speed for the quarterback position. His arm strength. intelligence, and composure were other factors that led to him being a top ten pick.

On the other hand, some aren’t so sold on the former Oregon Duck, pointing out inconsistencies in decision-making and passing accuracy which could hamper his ability to succeed in the National Football League.

Herbert, however, has the potential to make his new team an offensive juggernaut after being placed in an offense that looks almost custom-tailored for his success.

The Eugene, Oregon native spent three and a half seasons as a starting quarterback in college, compiling a 29-14 win-loss record and throwing 95 touchdowns compared to only 25 interceptions.

Herbert’s Ducks, until his final season with the team which ended with a Pac-12 Championship and a Rose Bowl trophy, were a largely mediocre to above-average team that didn’t surround the quarterback with the weapons that Burrow and Tagovailoa had.

This, however, will completely change for the 22-year-old in Los Angeles.

The Chargers have one of the most talented and complete receiving corps in the National Football League, an advantage that Herbert largely lacked during his time in college. This will lead to the quarterback’s natural arm strength and play-making ability to take off, teaming up with threats such as Keenan Allen, Mike Henry, and Hunter Henry to pair a massively-talented signal caller with an elite group of pass catchers.

Herbert also gives the Chargers a new dimension of running ability, as he is lauded for his foot speed and agility. Coaches largely told Herbert not to run while in college due to concerns about his health, however, his 4.68 second 40 yard dash time shows just how talented of a runner he can be.

Herbert will have work to do in order to adjust to the NFL game and become accustomed to the speed of defenses in the league, and he would still benefit from the Chargers making some upgrades at the offensive line positions in order to protect him better.

However, it’s clear that the elements of Herbert along with a skilled and talented group of wide receivers give the Chargers the unique ability to become one of the league’s most electric offenses in the near future.
