Veteran outfielder Jurickson Profar will be back with the San Diego Padres in the 2024 MLB season.

According to multiple reports, Profar inked a new one-year deal with the franchise. He will reportedly receive a base salary of $1 million, with an additional $1.5 million coming his way if he reaches the threshold for performance-based bonuses.

The move is expected to be official once Profar undergoes his medical.

Jurickson Profar initially joined the Padres ahead of the 2020 season in a trade from the Oakland Athletics. He spent three years with the franchise before opting out of his contract and inking a one-year deal with the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies ended up releasing Profar in August, after which he signed a minor league deal to return to the Padres organization. He ended up appearing in 14 games with San Diego last season, batting .296 with one home run and seven RBIs.

Profar isn’t likely to play a major role for the Padres, but he provides the team with welcomed depth on the position of deficit. Additionally, the 30-year-old player is a popular player in the clubhouse and will provide leadership off the field.

“It’s hard to quantify; otherwise, we would have this thing figured out in our game,” Shildt said. “But having the experience and knowing how important clubhouses are, how important it is to have positive guys that also can share truths with everybody around them, hold guys accountable in a good way — Jurickson brings that.”

The San Diego Padres continued their busy offseason on Monday by making a trade with the Oakland Athletics to acquire shortstop Jurickson Profar.

San Diego, which has already signed Drew Pomeranz to a free-agent deal as well as acquiring Zach Davies and Trent Grisham from the Milwaukee Brewers, now have a player that profiles as the team’s starting second baseman heading into the 2020 season.

They have given up catcher Austin Allen, who struggled in his big league debut with San Diego but hit .330 with 20 home runs at AAA last year, in exchange for the 26-year-old Curacao native.

The hole left by dealing Luis Urias in the team’s trade with the Brewers last week needed to be filled somehow and the acquisition of Profar appears to do just that.

Oakland was expected to non-tender Profar after a disappointing 2019 season had they not found a trade partner for him. Profar hit only .218 in 139 games with Oakland last season, but he did slug 20 home runs and collect 67 RBI.

This will be Profar’s third Major League team in three seasons, as he spent the previous years of his career in the Texas Rangers organization.

Once considered a top prospect, Profar will have another chance to break out in San Diego, possibly his last as a starting player if he does not show improvements.
