The Baltimore Orioles tapped into the free agency market earlier this week, signing second baseman Kolten Wong and right-hand pitcher Julio Teheran to minor league contracts.

Wong and Teheran will get an opportunity to earn a spot on the active roster, being invited to Orioles spring training camp.

Wong spent the 2023 season with the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, batting .183 with four home runs, 27 RBIs, and three stolen bases in 87 games combined. He previously spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers, winning two Gold Glove Awards and three Fielding Bible Awards.

“I think just adding another player that we’re very familiar with and has been a major league second baseman for a long time,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after the moves were announced. “We’re just continuing to add talented guys, and a veteran presence is important, also.”

Teheran, on the other hand, is a two-time All-Star who played his first nine years in the majors with the Atlanta Braves before embarking on stints with the Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, and Milwaukee Brewers. He made 11 starts with the Brewers in 2023, ending the campaign with a 3-5 record, 4.40 ERA, and 50 strikeouts.

“Like we talked about a lot, you can never have enough pitching,” added Hyde. “To bring in another guy who’s got a lot of major league experience, been a starter in this league for a long time, we’re going to take a look, and hopefully he can help us.”

Veteran MLB right-handed pitcher Julio Teheran has found a new home in free agency, signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

The long-time Atlanta Braves starter, whose team option for the 2020 season was not picked up at the conclusion of the season, heads west to join a team where he will expected to be a key member of the pitching staff.

The Colombia native will reportedly earn $9 million next season.

Teheran, once one of the top prospects in baseball, spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Braves. He was a durable workhorse, pitching at least 170 innings in every season since 2013.

Twice named an All-Star during his run with the Braves, Teheran has molded himself into a ground ball artist with a crafty repertoire after losing the zip on his fastball over the past few seasons. While he doesn’t throw too hard anymore, he was still effective in 2019, posting a 10-11 record with a 3.81 ERA.

Teheran is the second right-handed addition to the Angels rotation in free agency this season, joining Dylan Bundy as a new face in Anaheim.

Los Angeles will be thrilled if Teheran can eat innings and post respectable numbers, allowing the team’s high-powered offense to do the heavy work in 2020.
