The Philadelphia Eagles are adding more weapons to their already potent offense. According to multiple reports, the Eagles have signed seven-time Pro Bowl wideout Julio Jones to a one-year deal.

Jones will reportedly land on the Eagles’ practice squad but is expected to be elevated or signed to the active roster soon.

The Eagles were in need of a wide receiver depth after third-year wideout Quez Watkins landed on Injured Reserve due to a hamstring injury. The team worked out several veterans but ended up going with a proven player in Jones to complement their young wideout duo of AJ Brown and Devonta Smith.

Julio Jones is considered one of the best wide receivers of his generation. He spent 10 years with the Atlanta Falcons and broke almost all important receiving records for the franchise. Jones earned seven Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections during his time in Atlanta while leading the league in receiving yards twice.

Jones’ career has been on a downward trajectory since he left the Falcons in 2021. Playing for the Tennessee Titans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the past two seasons, Jones managed only 55 catches for 733 yards and three touchdowns.

With Atlanta Falcons heading towards their third straight season without playoffs, many people think that their star wideout Julio Jones would be better off elsewhere. But it appears that Jones doesn’t share that opinion.

Speaking with reporters after a crushing 23-22 loss to Detroit Lions over the weekend, Jones was asked at one point whether he would like to be traded.

“No,” said Jones with determination. “I play football. I know who I am, I know what I got going on. I know what I mean to this team.”

Jones has been one of the league’s best wide receivers for years now and is poised to have another productive year in 2020 despite Atlanta’s struggles. He has 31 catches for 447 yards and two touchdowns in the first seven weeks of the season.

There is no doubt that the Falcons could get some major assets in return for Julio Jones if they would put him out on the market. But multiple reports say this isn’t an option, as Atlanta isn’t interested in parting ways with their best players despite poor performances in recent years.

Another thing that makes Jones’ trade unlikely is the fact that he still has three years and $64 million guaranteed left on his deal, and moving him would have big consequences for the Falcons’ salary cap.

Jones spent his entire career in Atlanta, earning seven Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections since 2012. He has 820  career receptions for 12,475 yards and 59 touchdowns.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has a reputation of being one of the most productive wide receivers in the league’s history. He intends to justify this in the upcoming NFL season, while also aiming to deliver some crazy numbers in the process.

Talking with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday, Jones said that he will “go crazy” this year referring to his productivity and performance on the field.

“I’m not even going to lie to you, I’m going crazy this year,” – said Jones. “I’m going crazy. I’ve been doing everything that I need to do. I’m taking care of my body. Physically and mentally, I’ll be ready to go.”

When asked whether “going crazy” means he will try to get 2,000 receiving yards and break the NFL record, Jones decided to set the bar even higher.

“Well, I’m not a prediction-type guy, but I might mess around and go three (thousand), you know what I’m talking about,” – he told the outlet.

While no one doubts Julio Jones’ abilities, the numbers he is talking about are a bit out of this world. The current record for receiving yard is 1,964, set by retired Detroit Lions’ WR Calvin Johnson in 2012.

The second name on the list, however, is Jones, who had 1,871 receiving yards in 2015. So, you never know. Crazier things have happened.

Atlanta Falcons’ wide receiver Julio Jones is one of the best in the game at his position, so it’s natural that he wants to be paid accordingly. Jones has been demanding a sizable extension for some time now, and it looks like Falcons finally decided to do something about it.

Atlanta’s general manager Thomas Dimitroff recently talked with reporters about the status of extension talks with Jones and said that the two sides recently “had really good conversations.”

“We’ll continue to talk with both Julio and his representation,” – said Dimitroff on Wednesday. “We’ve have had really good conversations with them. There is no particular time on that. I’m not concerned about it, nor is he. We’ll get that figured out.”

Julio Jones tried to get a new deal in 2018 by sitting out the team’s OTAs, but Falcons didn’t cave. Still, they did some restructuring in order to pay him more money last year while promising they will start the contract discussions in 2019. Jones is currently slated to earn $9.6 million in 2019 and $11.426 million in 2020 under his old contract.

These are low numbers compared to the figures that other top receivers are earning at this point. Oakland Raiders’ Antonio Brown recently reworked his contract and now will get $16,7 million per year while Cleveland Browns’ Odell Beckham Jr. is getting $18 million annually.

“I know there is interest because of everything that’s going on with all of the receivers in the league,” Dimitroff said. “There are big numbers (being) talked about and a big situation there. Look, we feel good with our communications there.”

Although Atlanta Falcons didn’t have a successful season in 2018, Julio Jones still managed to put out absurd numbers. He ended the year with 133 receptions for 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns.  Jones also earned his sixth Pro Bowl appearance while receiving Second-team All-Pro honors.

Atlanta Falcons won’t give their All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones a new contract; at least not this season. Jones has been asking for a new deal for some time now and even decided to sit out offseason workouts hoping Falcons will cave in.

Julio Jones is entering the third year of his five-year, $71.25 million, contract extension signed in 2015, which made his chances of getting a new deal really slim. NFL teams rarely even discuss new deals with players that have two years left on their deals, let alone three. Still, the team won’t ignore Jones’ request in full. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Falcons promised the player that they will discuss a new deal after 2018.

It remains to be seen whether Julio Jones will stay firm in his desire to get a new contract. He could decide to skip training camp and preseason games in order to pressure the organization. Still, the Falcons will most likely stand by their decision, given the fact that they need to work out an extension of players who are entering the final year of their contracts like Grady Jarrett, Jake Matthews, and Ricardo Allen.

Julio Jones was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons as the sixth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. During his eight seasons in the league, he received First-team All-Pro honors two times and earned five Pro-Bowl selections. In 2017, he had 88 receptions for 1,444 yards and three touchdowns.
