Julian Nagelsmann has signed a contract extension with the Germany national team, thereby remaining in his role as head coach until after the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, the German Football Association confirmed on Friday.

“This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country,” Nagelsmann stated.

In addition to the 2026 World Cup, Nagelsmann will lead his team in the upcoming Euro 2024 competition as the host nation. Having become Germany’s head coach after being sacked by Bayern Munich in 2023, Nagelsmann was being linked with a return to the club after current manager Thomas Tuchel announced that he would depart at the end of the season. This decision has thus brought an end to such speculation.

Bayern Munich announced on Friday that Julian Nagelsmann has been dismissed from the role of manager. He has been replaced by former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

“FC Bayern Munchen has released head coach Julian Nagelsmann,” Bayern said in a statement. “This decision was taken by CEO Oliver Kahn and board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic in consultation with club president Herbert Hainer. Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel will receive a contract until 30 June 2025 and will supervise squad training for the first time on Monday.”

Hired in April 2021, Nagelsmann led Bayern to their 10th successive Bundesliga title last season. The team has remained strong under Nagelsmann’s guidance, proceeding to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League and remaining just one point off current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund. Nagelsmann’s dismissal is believed to be related to the team’s domestic record, with the team just four points above third-placed Union Berlin.

Prior to being defeated 2-1 by Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, Bayern was at the top of the Bundesliga table, however, the loss allowed Dortmund to leapfrog them.

With the international break underway, Tuchel’s first game with Bayern will be against bitter rivals Dortmund on April 1. He will also manage Bayern in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal clash with Manchester City on April 11.

On Wednesday night, one of the most exciting UEFA Champions League matches took place on Parc des Princes in Paris. It was a duel between one of the most successful soccer clubs in history Bayern Munich and one of the wealthiest, Paris Saint-Germain. PSG won the game 3-0 and showed that the team’s owners spent their money well. On the other hand, Bayern Munich didn’t only lose the game. They have also lost patience with their manager Carlo Ancelotti and announced on Thursday that they have decided to search for a new person to take over the team. Current assistant manager and former Bayern Munich player Willy Sagnol has been appointed as interim manager. Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann are targeted by the club to fill the vacated position, but Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp isn’t out of the picture.

The performance of our team since the start of the season did not meet the expectations we put to them,” – said Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, explaining the team’s decision. “I would like to thank Carlo for his cooperation. Carlo is my friend and will remain my friend, but we had to make a professional decision. The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to draw consequences.

Ancelotti didn’t make comments to the media about him being fired, but did went on Twitter and said that “it has been a great honour to form part of Bayern’s history” and thanked “the Players and it’s amazing fans.”

Carlo Ancelotti became Bayern Munich’s manager in 2016, replacing Pep Guardiola who went to Manchester City. Ancelotti came to the club with 3 UEFA Champions League titles and as a person who won domestic titles in 4 countries. He went on to win the Bundesliga in his first year with Bayern Munich alongside two DFL-Supercup titles. Still, the club didn’t play particularly well in UEFA Champions League being eliminated in the last year’s quarter-final.
