Jozy Altidore’s return to the United States lasted shorter than anyone could have guessed. According to influential soccer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Altidore is leaving New England Revolution after less than six months and will join Mexico’s Puebla on loan until the end of the year.

Altidore joined the Revolution as a free agent in February, marking the first time he suited up for the U.S.-based MLS team since 2008. However, the 32-year-old player struggled to get his form going and only managed to score once in 17 games played.

While the Revolution didn’t officially announce the move, the team’s head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena confirmed Altidore’s departure during a press conference on Thursday. According to Arena, it was Altidore who wanted to move.

“He [Altidore] will be going until January to Puebla FC. And Jozy initiated that loan,” Arena said.

Jozy Altidore spent the previous seven years with Toronto FC. During that time, he helped the club win MLS Cup in 2017 while making two MLS All-Star appearances. However, Altidore struggled with injuries in recent years while also clashing with the club’s coaching staff, which prompted Toronto to buy out his contract.

Altidore, who also played for Villareal, AZ, and Southampton, among other clubs, has 115 appearances and 42 goals for the United States men’s national team. However, his last international game came in 2019, and he has failed to receive a single call-up since then.

Ex-USMNT striker Jozy Altidore will continue his soccer career with the New England Revolution after signing a three-year contract with the MLS side on Monday. Altidore joins the Revs after spending the previous seven years with the Toronto FC.

Altidore is a free agent signing for the Revolution since he previously agreed to a buyout with Toronto. According to reports, the Canadian club agreed to pay the 32-year-old around $4.5 million to get him out of town.

Altidore had a challenging couple of seasons, dealing with multiple injuries and enduring a strained relationship with Toronto’s coaching staff. As a result, he only suited up for 26 games and scored just seven goals in 2020 and 2021 combined.

But despite Altidore’s struggles, New England’s head coach Bruce Arena believes the striker can get his career back on track with the Revs.

“I believe Jozy can continue to be an outstanding goal scorer, and we will work hard to get him back to full fitness and in good form over the next couple of months,” said Arena.

Altidore scored 79 goals for Toronto in 173 appearances while helping the club to win MLS Cup in 2017. He also received several individual accolades, including MLS Cup MVP Award and two MLS All-Star honors.

Earlier in his career, Altidore played for New York Red Bulls, Villarreal, and Sunderland, among other teams. He also made 115 appearances for United States Men’s National Team and has scored 42 goals on the international stage.

One of the most burning questions ahead of this year’s MLS Cup Final game between Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders is whether Jozy Altidore will recover in time. And, while we won’t get the definitive answer until the game day, it seems like the answer is no.

Altidore hasn’t been on the field since early October and has missed Toronto’s all three playoff games. Although it has been recently reported that he might return in time for the showdown against Sounders, the 29-year-old wasn’t all that optimistic when asked about his status on Monday.

“It’s been a while. At this point, it’ll take a little bit of a miracle to be out there on Sunday,” – Altidore told reporters. “But that’s where I am. And I’ve just got to try to keep trying to get myself there.”

Toronto’s head coach Greg Vanney, on the other hand, is a bit more positive about Altidore’s availability and intends to have him practice with the first team in the next couple of days.

“We hope, within the next few days,” – said Vanney when asked when will Altidore return to practice. “We’ve got eight more days to get him going. The more fitness and high-speed running that we can get him, the more prepared he’ll be. We can push back striking for a few more days.”

While Toronto is evidently doing just fine without Jozy Altidore, having him on the field would undoubtedly give them a huge advantage over Seattle. Altidore played 22 games in MLS this season, contributing with 11 goals and seven assists.

Toronto FC and USMNT star striker Jozy Altidore could soon be heading to China. According to Steven Goff of Washington Post, Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning is interested in acquiring Altidore and reportedly has made a $10 million bid for the 29-year-old.

If the deal goes through, Goff reports that Altidore would get a $25 million cotract for three years. For comparison, now he is earning $6.3 million annually according to the contract he signed with Toronto back in February.

Altidore is currently away on international duty, playing with USMNT at CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played two games on the tournament and managed to score one goal.

Jozy Altidore has spent the previous five years with Toronto, during which he played 134 games in MLS and managed to score 65 goals. This also includes five goals he scored in nine matches he played in 2019.

Before he signed a contract extension with Toronto, Altidore was rumored to be interested in return to Europe. Toronto eventually came with a big offer after losing Sebastian Giovinco, and Altidore agreed to a new deal that runs through 2022.

Toronto FC not only failed to reach MLS Cup playoffs this season but might also face with departures of their key players. Striker Jozy Altidore, who scored 59 goals in 110 appearances for the club, hinted that 2-1 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps might be his last game for Toronto FC.

It’s not in my hands,” – said Altidore when asked whether he will be in Toronto in 2019. “I’ve tried to show every night I stepped on the field since 2015 when I arrived, to give everything I could, all the time. [I] tried to play for the fans, for my family, for everybody that has followed this club. I’ve done what I can.

“If my future isn’t here, it’s been nothing but a pleasure. I thank the fans for all the support through the years and all the best in the future.” – the 28-year old added.

While Jozy Altidore has one more year left on his contract, there were rumors he could end up returning to Europe where he played in La Liga for Villarreal and had two stints in the Premier League with Hull and Sunderland.

Since Altidore came in 2015, Toronto FC made two consecutive MLS Cup finals in 2016 and 2017, winning the later one. They have also had a strong start of 2018, reaching the final of CONCACAF Champions League. In 2018 season of Major League Soccer season, however, the team struggled to find their form and is currently sitting at the ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto FC and U.S. striker Jozy Altidore could make a surprising return to Europe this month. According to ESPN, several sources have confirmed that Altidore is drawing interest from several European clubs including those from France and Italy.

The move to Italy wouldn’t be possible at the moment since transfer window in Seria A has closed on Friday. The window for French Ligue 1, however, is open until the end of this month and there are plenty of teams in need of a capable striker like Altidore.

Jozy Altidore is coming off foot surgery, getting back to full action last month. Still, Altidore managed to make an immediate impact, scoring a hat-trick on Wednesday and helping Toronto to win third straight Canadian Championship.

After starting his professional career with New York Bulls, Jozy Altidore earned himself a $10 million worth transfer to La Liga side Villareal. After failing to adapt in Spain, Altidore tried his luck in several other European clubs like Hull City, AZ, and Sunderland but never established himself as a significant contributor.

He then decided to return to MLS, and sign with Toronto FC in 2015. This proved to be a good career move since he became one of the best strikers in the league. Altidore played 106 games for Toronto and scored 56 goals. He won several trophies with the club including the MLS Cup in 2017.
