The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to use their franchise tag on Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs. Despite previously declining his fifth-year option, the Raiders reportedly see Jacobs as the future of their franchise.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Raiders will continue negotiating a long-term deal with Jacobs, but the franchise tag ensures he remains in Las Vegas for 2023, regardless of the outcome of those talks.

The Raiders drafted Josh Jacobs in the first round of the 2019 draft, and the Alabama product went on to make an immediate impact. He delivered consecutive 1,000+ rushing yards seasons in his first two years in NFL while becoming a Pro Bowler.

The 2021 campaign turned out to be a disappointment for Jacobs as he struggled with consistency and finished the campaign with only 872 rushing yards. This led the front office not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, something that many considered to be a smart move at the time.

The lack of faith by the Raiders just gave Jacobs more motivation ahead of 2022, with the 25-year-old delivering his best season as a pro. Jacobs played all 17 games, rushing for a league-leading 1,653 yards while scoring 12 touchdowns. He also added a career-high 400 yards receiving.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ running back Josh Jacobs delivered an impressive performance in his team’s 40-34 overtime win against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Jacobs not only delivered a walk-off 86-yard touchdown run but also finished the night with a couple of Raiders’ franchise records in his possession.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Jacobs’ outing is that he wasn’t even sure whether he’ll play against the Seahawks. The 24-year-old was dealing with a minor calf injury, which he picked up during Friday’s practice, and there were discussions about sitting him out for the game. However, Jacobs insisted that he was ready to go and ready he was.

Jacobs finished the contest with 33 carries for 229 rushing yards, breaking the Raiders’ single-game rushing record. He added 74 receiving yards on six catches, enough for him to also claim the franchise’s single-game record for all-purpose yards with 303 yards.

Josh Jacobs has been a force for the Raiders this season. He already has 1,159 rushing yards and nine TDs on the ground throughout the first 12 weeks while adding 325 yards receiving. These impressive performances will likely prompt the Raiders to think hard about keeping the former first-round pick beyond 2022 despite rejecting his fifth-year option earlier this year.

The win against the Seahawks allowed the Raiders to improve to a 4-7 record in AFC West and keep their playoff hopes alive. However, in order to have a chance to get to playoffs for the second season straight, the Las Vegas team will probably have to win at least five of their last six games.

Multiple reports in recent days indicated that the Las Vegas Raiders are shopping their starting back Josh Jacobs and would part with Pro Bowler for the right price. However, even if the reports are accurate, the Raiders’ new head coach Josh McDaniels isn’t ready to admit that.

Jacobs recently received a heavy workload in a 27-11 preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, prompting many to see it as a “showcase” for prospective buyers. But when asked about it during Monday’s press conference, McDaniels said that isn’t something that crossed his mind.

“We have a lot of confidence in J.J.,” McDaniels said. “And, you know, he did well with his opportunities, which we hoped he would”

“We have no desire to do that [trade Jacobs] at all,” he added.

The Raiders selected Josh Jacobs in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft to be their running back of the future. The Alabama product played the part in his first two years in the league, topping 1,000+ rushing yards and 7+ touchdowns in each, but his production dipped last year.

In the 15 games he played in 2020, Jacobs managed 872 yards while averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Unconvinced about his long-term future with the franchise, the Raiders opted to decline the fifth-year option on his rookie deal. The 24-year-old player is now set to become a free agent after the season.

As Antonio Brown continues to be the talk of the NFL, the Raiders let their team do the talking with a big 24-16 opening night win.

Tyrell Williams, who overnight became the team’s new WR1, adapted well to his role and caught 6 passes for 105 yards. He made some impressive catches including an incredible 24 yard snag late in the 4th quarter which set Oakland up inside the Denver 5.

QB Derek Carr completed 22 of 26 passes and threw for 259 yards and a touchdown. His completion rate said it all as Carr looked comfortable and completed some tight passes through traffic in clutch situations.

Rookie running back Josh Jacobs ran for 85 yards on 23 touches and found the end zone twice, becoming the first Raiders running back to score two touchdowns in his NFL debut.

In front of 52,359 fans, Oakland wanted to prove that they have a competitive team even without Antonio Brown, and the rowdy crowd let them know that after every big play from the Raiders. Perhaps it was the motivation they needed, as Oakland was louder than the stadium has been in years.
