New England Patriots’ leading wide receiver Josh Gordon announced on Thursday that he is stepping away from football. Gordon, who joined the Pats in September from Cleveland Browns, announced his decision via Twitter, saying he wants to focus on his mental health.

“I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level.” Gordon wrote. “I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally. With that said, I will be stepping away from the football field for a bit to focus on my mental health.”

New England also issued a statement, saying they support the player’s “continued efforts to focus on his health.“

Josh Gordon, who is considered one of the most talented WRs in the last decade, struggled with substance abuse since entering the league in 2012. After serving several suspensions for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, it seemed that Gordon is dedicated to leaving his problems behind and starting fresh.

Still, he managed to play just one regular season game for the Browns, before being traded to New England after “violating team’s trust.”

After a shaky start with the Patriots, Josh Gordon established himself as No.2 receiver on the team’s depth chart. He will finish the season with 40 receptions for team-high 720 yards and three touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns have finally had it with their troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon and will release or trade the 27-year-old in the coming days.

Initially, the Browns announced on Saturday that they will release Gordon after he reportedly showed up late for practice with a hamstring injury. The player injured himself on a promotional photo shoot which was not team sponsored according to multiple sources.

“This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday,” – said Browns’ general manager John Dorsey in a statement on Saturday. “For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally and wanted the best for him, but unfortunately we’ve reached a point where we feel it’s best to part ways and move forward. We wish Josh well.”

Insiders close to Cleveland Browns organization say that the team wanted to move on from Josh Gordon in order to finally start a culture change. Gordon had numerous off-field issues since he joined the Browns in 2012 including multiple violations of league’s substance abuse policy. He ended up missing 2014 and 2015 season while playing only 11 games since 2013 season. Browns supported Gordon through all of these years, but it looks like they gave up after these recent events.

Despite all the problems that surround Josh Gordon, there are still other NFL teams that would like to see him in their uniform. This is why the Browns decided against releasing Gordon on Monday as they initially planned, and are now looking into trade options with San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots being among the most probable options.

There were a lot of questions surrounding Gordon since he returned, especially those considering his fitness level and ability to contribute at the start of the season. The player tried to answer some of them during his media session, saying that he is feeling great, but that is on the coaches to determine the best workload for him.

“I’m going as much as they tell me to go,” – Gordon told reporters Wednesday. “If they tell me to sit out for a period of time, I do as I’m told. It’s just great being in this atmosphere. Fortunately, I know the plays already, so it’s real good to take the mental reps, physical reps, as much as I can do I try to take advantage of it.“

But, if you ask Flash Gordon for an opinion, he will tell you that he is ready to play as soon as Sunday when Browns meet with Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.

“No, I told you guys before, I’ll be 100 percent,” – he said. “I feel 100 percent today and I’ll be 100 percent Sunday.“

Cleveland Browns will hope this is true since they would really use a healthy and fit Josh Gordon, who can get them yards and TDs at will like he used to back in 2013.
