Jorge Masvidal knows that his current three-fight losing streak doesn’t look good. This is why he is thinking about calling it quits if it becomes a four-fight losing streak after UFC 287.

Masvidal, one of the fan favorites, is set to face Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 on Saturday’s co-headlining fight in Miami. During an appearance on UFC 287 Countdown earlier this week, the 38-year-old admitted that he might end his career if he doesn’t come out as a winner from the octagon.

“This could be the last one,” Masvidal said. “If I lose, I’m pretty much calling it quits. But a win against Gilbert means that things are headed in the right direction. So if I roll the dice and do everything right, I’m going for it all.”

Despite thinking about retirement, Masvidal believes he is still able to compete at a high level. 

“I think I’m at my best right now – my mental (game), my physical – and now I’ve got to go out there and prove it,” he added. “I’ve got my back up against the wall.”

Jorge Masvidal has a 35 -16 record in MMA, including 12-9 in UFC. His most recent fight came more than a year ago at UFC 272 when he lost to Colby Covington via unanimous decision. Prior to that, he lost two UFC Welterweight Championship fights against Kamaru Usman.

Jorge Masvidal wants an opportunity to avenge his UFC welterweight title loss against Kamaru Usman. And he wants it as soon as possible.

Masvidal and Usman met on Sunday during UFC’s Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, with Usman taking the win in three rounds by a unanimous decision and keeping the welterweight belt.

But, Masvidal believes he’s better and is eager to prove it.

“I want that damn belt, and I’m stubborn,” Masvidal told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Tuesday. “And I know I’m better than Usman, and I want to prove it. I want to fight again.”

Jorge Masvidal entered the Fight Island bill after Gilbert Burns had to pull out of the fight against Usman due to a positive coronavirus test. Masvidal signed on just several days before the actual event and hasn’t had a full fighting camp prior to the bout.

Masvidal believes that a proper preparation would make a significant difference, although he is giving Usman the credit for the win in fight No.1.

“I’m not going to take nothing from him; he won the first one. Let’s do it again,” he added.

While fans would like to see Masvidal and Usman meet again soon, that would probably be difficult to pull off due to other challengers. Burns wants another opportunity, while Jamaican Leon Edwards, who is currently riding an eight-match winning streak, is looking for his shot as well.

Kamaru Usman will get a new challenger for his UFC welterweight belt after Gilbert Burns was forced to withdraw from the fight. UFC announced on Monday that veteran Jorge Masvidal will step in and face Usman at UFC 251.

The title fight against Usman and Masvidal is scheduled for July 12th in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

UFC has been trying to get the two fighters in the ring for some time now but had issues with convincing Masvidal to ink a new deal. After months of negotiations, the organization pulled out of the talks and ended up getting Burns for the title fight against Usman.

However, Burns tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, jeopardizing the biggest fight on UFC 251. So, UFC turned to Masvidal once again and managed to get the job done over the weekend while signing the 35-year-old to a new multi-year deal.

Kamaru Usman has a 16-1 record in MMA but hasn’t lost his last 15 fights. He won the UFC Welterweight Title in 2019 against Tyron Woodley, and successfully defended it against Colby Covington at UFC 245.

Jorge Masvidal has 35 wins and 13 losses since making his MMA debut in 2003. He is on a three-fight winning streak, suffering his last loss against Stephen Thompson in 2017. Fight against Usman will be Masvidal’s first title fight.
