Jon Gruden decided to step down from his position as a head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. Gruden resigned on Monday night, and the team confirmed the news via their social media.

The Raiders will turn to Rich Bisaccia, the team’s special teams coordinator, as an interim head coach for the time being.

Gruden’s resignation comes after reports surfaced about him using offensive language in a series of controversial emails from 10 years ago.

“I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction,” Gruden said in a statement. “Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Jon Gruden was hired by the Raiders in 2018, agreeing to a 10-year, $100 million deal with the organization. Since then, Gruden posted a 22-31 head coaching record and was yet to have a winning season. The team started the 2021 campaign with 3-0 but has found itself on a two-game losing streak since then.

This was his second stint with the Raiders, having previously led the franchise between 1998 and 2001. Gruden also coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with whom he won the Super Bowl XXXVII.

Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden isn’t having a great start to the 2018 season as he hoped for when he signed a 10-year, $100 million contract with the team in January. Back then, the 55-year-old announced big things and promised that his team would play great football. Instead, the Raiders are now one of the rare NFL teams with a 0-3 record and pretty much out of playoff picture.

It looks like Gruden realized that he can’t back up his previous statements, and has now started to preach patience, saying that the “results will happen” at some point.

It’s justifiable,” – said Gruden off criticism aimed towards him after a bad start. “I have a pretty good idea of what this business is all about. But I’m also realistic. I’m also very optimistic. I’m going to continue to work hard. I think I have as good a coaching staff as there is in football. The results will happen. It might not happen this week. It might not happen this month, next month, but we’re going to get results here, and we’re going to get this Oakland Raider football team back on track. We just have to prove it.”

It wasn’t a surprise that Oakland Raiders looked at Jon Gruden as their savior. He already coached the team with success between 1997 and 2001 and was the man who denied them a Super Bowl trophy in 2002 as a coach of Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raiders had a winning season only once since then, and it was almost poetic when they turned to Gruden and convinced him to come out of semi-retirement.

But, the football changed a lot since Jon Gruden coached the last time, and it remains unclear how will he adapt to the new NFL. So far he struggled, but our hunch tells us that the Raiders will give him more than enough time to settle in even if that means one or two embarrassing seasons.

ESPN reports that Jon Gruden being a new head coach for the Oakland Raiders is a done deal. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Gruden will sign one of the longest coaching deals in NFL history, inking a 10-year contract, worth around $100 million. This means that Gruden will be one of the best-paid members of the Raiders since only three players (Derek Carr, Kelechi Osemele, and Gabe Jackson) are earning more than $10 million annually. The Raiders will officially introduce Gruden on Tuesday when they called up a news conference.

Although a surprise, Gruden’s 10-year contract isn’t a first in the league’s history since Dallas Cowboys previously gave both Jimmy Johnson and Tom Landry 10-year deals. It does, however, show how Raiders are desperate to get their man. The owner Mark Davis was so determined to hire Gruden that he was ready to offer him an ownership stake in the team as part of the deal.

NFL announced on Friday that during their search for a new head coach, the Raiders compiled with Rooney Rule which requires the team to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs.

We believe the Rooney Rule was complied with. Minority candidates were interviewed,” – said NFL executive vice president of communications Joe Lockhart during a conference call. “We’ll see what decision they make.

Jon Gruden will make a return to Oakland Raiders, who gave him his first head coach job in 1998. In his first stint with the team, he compiled 38-26 record before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. On his first season with the Buccaneers, Gruden won the Super Bowl after 12-4 regular season finish. He served as team’s coach until 2008, when he was fired. Gruden’s career record is 100-85 and 5-4 in the postseason. He currently serves as an analyst for ESPN‘s Monday Night Football.
