Safety Johnathan Abram, who was a first-round pick in 2019, will get another chance to prove he deserves to stay in the NFL. Abram was recently released by the Green Bay Packers but is now being picked up by the Seattle Seahawks, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

If Abram suits up for the Seahawks this coming week, it will be his third team in 2022. He started the season with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team that originally drafted him. But after Week 9, the Raiders decided they didn’t need the 26-year-old player, releasing him.

The Packers swooped in, claiming Abram on waivers with expectations that he’ll play a big role in their secondary. But the Mississippi State product ended up playing only 26 snaps on the special team across two games before being released again.

The Seahawks now hope they can give Abram the necessary help to succeed, something that the Raiders and Packers couldn’t do. It is also a move made out of necessity since Seattle’s starting safety Ryan Neal is dealing with shoulder and elbow injuries that might limit his availability in the coming weeks.

Since entering the league, Abram has made 257 tackles, including eight tackles for loss. He added 12 passes defended, nine QB hits, and three interceptions. He is known for his physical presence on the field, something that should help Seattle’s struggling run defense.

Oakland Raiders managed to get the win in Week 1 against Denver Broncos on Monday night, but that came with a significant price. The team confirmed on Wednesday that their rookie safety Johnathan Abram suffered a shoulder injury during the game and will be placed on the Injured Reserve list.

The first reports say that Abram, who was the Raiders’ first-round pick in 2019, is expected to have surgery on his shoulder next week, which would effectively end his season. The 22-year-old had an encouraging NFL debut, playing 57 snaps against Broncos and recording five tackles and one pass defended.

“He’s everything as advertised. He’d probably play this week if we let him,” – said Raiders head coach Jon Gruden. “But he’s going to have surgery I think tomorrow, and we’re just keeping him in our thoughts and prayers, and we’re going to miss him no doubt.”

Raiders will now probably turn to veteran Curtis Riley to be their top pick on the safety position. Riley started his career as a cornerback, but played the entire 2018 season as a free safety with New York Giants. He ended the year with 75 tackles, five passes defended, four interceptions, and one touchdown.
