The Denver Broncos are going to be getting a new voice in their front office. This is after Hall of Famer John Elway has been making all the football decisions for the franchise in the past 10 years.

The Broncos confirmed on Tuesday that the organization intends to hire a general manager ahead of the 2021 NFL season. The new GM will take on most of Elway’s duties, including roster moves, draft choices, and free agency dealings.

Elway will assume a new role moving forward and will act as the Broncos’ President of football operations.

“I knew there was going to be a time at some point in time, this was a position I would, hopefully, move to,” said Elway during a press conference. “It gave me the opportunity to move up and I think it’s the right time for me.”

Elway will be at the front of the GM search with CEO Joe Ellis, director of player personnel Matt Russell, and head coach Vic Fangio. Several names have already been linked with the opening, including San Francisco 49ers senior football vice president Adam Peters and Tampa Bay Buccaneers director of player personnel John Spytek.

John Elway joined the Denver Broncos in an executive role in 2011, having previously led the franchise to two Super Bowls as a quarterback during the late ’90s. Elway was handed all the decision-making power, and he did the best with it early on.

In the first five years under Elway in a management role, the Broncos won five AFC titles, made two Super Bowl trips, and won Super Bowl 50.

The next five, however, were less successful. Elway didn’t do a good job in finding a replacement for retired quarterback Peyton Manning, and the Broncos failed to make the playoffs ever since while recording just one winning season.

Since Peyton Manning retirement in 2016, Denver Broncos have been struggling to find their next star quarterback. Broncos had numerous misses with QBs both in the draft and free agency, but that didn’t stop their general manager John Elway from trying. In the second round of 2019 NFL Draft, Elway decided to take Missouri’s Drew Lock and now hopes the search is finally over.

Speaking with Mike Klis of 9News Denver, Elway said that the organization feel’s good about Lock and hopes that he will be the “guy for the future.”

“You’re always trying to find an answer to the quarterback position,” – said Elway. “You can’t wait till you don’t have one. We’ve been working on it and you’re always working on it. We feel good about what we have in Drew and his ability over the next couple years to continue to grow and make some strides. Hopefully, he’s that guy for the future.”

However, Drew Lock will likely have to wait a year or two before being able to show whether he is the Broncos future. Before drafting Lock, Denver traded for Baltimore Ravens’ signal-caller Joe Flacco, who is expected to be Week 1 starting QB when the 2019 NFL season kicks off. Broncos prefer to sit Lock and have him learn the trades of the professional football before throwing him into the fire, but if Flacco ends up struggling, it wouldn’t be strange for the team to change their decision.

During his four years at Missouri, Lock played 50 games (46 as a starter), and completed 56.percent of his passes for 12,193 yards and 99 touchdowns.

Denver Broncos are currently looking into the possibility of bringing another quarterback to serve as a backup to starter Case Keenum. If the team decides to make this move, former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick won’t be on their wish list according to Broncos’ general manager John Elway.

Asked on Thursday whether signing Kaepernick, who is currently a free agent, might be “a viable option,” Elway said that the 30-year-old has “had his chance” to be part of the organization and “passed it.”

You know what, and I said this a while ago: Colin had his chance to be here. We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it,” – Elway explained. “As I said in my deposition … he’s had his chance to be here. He passed it.”

John Elway attempted to trade for Colin Kaepernick back in 2016, meeting twice with the player. Broncos were in need of a quarterback but tried to get Kaepernick’s salary down from $11.9 million to $7 million as part of the trade. After several discussions and rounds of negotiations, the two sides couldn’t meet eye-to-eye, and the deal fell through.

Broncos then traded up in 2016 NFL Draft to take Paxton Lynch 26th overall, a move they went to regret. Lynch just started four games since then and was demoted to third string QB several days ago.

Colin Kaepernick, on the other hand, became the first player to protest during the U.S. national anthem in the 2016 preseason. Following the end of 2016 season, Kaepernick became a free agent and didn’t play football since.
