The Los Angeles Angels fired their manager Joe Maddon on Tuesday. The decision came in the midst of a disastrous losing streak that climbed to 12 games after the Angels were beaten 0-1 by the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

The LA team confirmed the news on social media and announced that third-base coach Phil Nevin would take over on an interim basis. Nevin joined the Angels organization ahead of the 2022 MLB season after a four-year stint with the New York Yankees.

The Angels entered the season red-hot and owned a 27-17 record at one point. However, they unraveled as the season progressed and now find themselves two games below .500. This puts the franchise in danger of extending its seven-season playoff drought.

Despite the team’s recent shortcomings, Maddon believes he should have been given a chance to turn things around.

“You always rely on people in charge to read the tea leaves properly. This time, they did not,” Maddon told The Athletic after the news became official. “You didn’t even have to ask me. You can ask any of the players or coaches. They’re the ones who really know.”

Joe Maddon has deep ties with the Angels. He played for the organization in the minors and then served as a coach with the franchise between 1994 and 2005. During this period, he had two stints as an interim manager. Maddon would go on to have a successful managerial career with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, winning a World Series with the latter.

Maddon returned to Los Angeles ahead of the 2020 MLB season. He posted a 130-148 managerial record since then, while the Angels finished fourth in AL West in the previous two seasons.

The Los Angeles Angels, who dismissed manager Brad Ausmus at the end of the regular season, got their man on Wednesday.

Joe Maddon, the former manager of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs, signed a three-year deal to become the AL West franchise’s new manager beginning in the 2020 season.

Maddon, considered to be one of the most respected managers in the game, is believed to be set to make between $12 and $15 million over the length of his contract.

The Pennsylvania native will return to the team that gave him his first coaching and managerial opportunity in the big leagues (albeit in an interim capacity). The 65-year-old spent 1994 to 2005 with the Angels.

After leaving the Angels, Maddon took over as the Tampa Bay Rays’ manager, where he transformed the once-lowly franchise into perennial playoff contenders.

Maddon then jumped to the Chicago Cubs in 2015, where he won two NL Central championships and the franchise’s first World Series title since 1908 in a magical 2016 season before parting ways with the franchise after the end of this year.

Now, the affable manager will be tasked with leading the Angels to the playoffs for the first time since 2014, rekindling the flame of a franchise that has failed to succeed despite having the game’s best player, Mike Trout.

After firing manager Brad Ausmus at the end of the 2019 season after only one year on the job, it appears that the Los Angeles Angels already have a candidate in mind to replace him.

Veteran manager Joe Maddon, whose contract was not renewed by the Chicago Cubs at the conclusion of the season, appears to be number one on the list of the Angels’ list of managerial candidates.

Maddon began his career as a coach with the Angels in 1994, spending time in various roles, but mainly as a bench coach for the Halos. He also took over twice after mid-season managerial dismissals as interim manager, compiling a 27-24 record.

The Pennsylvania native then moved on to manage the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs for a total of 14 seasons. In that time, he recorded a 1225-1044 record. He won two Manager of the Year Awards and led the Chicago Cubs to their first World Series title in over a century in 2016.

Maddon has been linked to the vacancy in Anaheim ever since parting ways with the Cubs at the end of the season due to his history with the AL West franchise as well as his previous success as a manager.

If the Angels get their wish, it looks like Maddon will be going home to manage the Halos.

After five seasons in which Joe Maddon took the Chicago Cubs franchise to heights that it hadn’t seen in over a century, the two parties have decided to move on.

At a press conference on Sunday morning before Chicago’s season finale against the St. Louis Cardinals, Maddon and team president Theo Epstein announced that the veteran manager would not be back for the 2020 season.

Maddon’s current contract expired at the end of this year, and both parties agreed that it would be best not to pursue a contract extension.

2019 was the first blemish on what had been a strong record for the affable Hazleton, Pennsylvania native with the Cubs, as he failed to lead them to the playoffs for the first time since taking over as the team’s manager in 2015.

While with Chicago, Maddon won two NL Central championships and two NL Wild Card berths, taking the Cubs to the 2016 World Series and winning the team a title for the first time since 1908.

After a disappointing 2019 that saw the Cubs miss the playoffs and go 84-78 despite a high payroll and a lot of talent, it became clear that Maddon’s good run was going to come to an end.

Maddon says that he wants to manage again next year, and he will certainly be a hot commodity on the market this winter.
