Denver Broncos are ending the Joe Flacco experiment after just one season. The team announced on Thursday that they are releasing Flacco “with a failed physical designation.”

According to reports, Denver won’t absorb a significant cap hit due to decision thanks to the fact that the two sides restructured Flacco’s deal back in 2019. The 35-year-old signal-caller was set to make $23.6 million in 2020 and $27.6 million in 2021.

Broncos brought in Joe Flacco last offseason with the intention to have him as a starter for at least a couple of years until rookie Drew Lock is ready to take over the reins. Flacco, however, had a disappointing start of the season before landing on the injured reserve list with neck issues. He ended the year with 1,822 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Lock eventually stepped in for Flacco and obviously showed enough for Broncos to trust him with leading the team in 2020. The former Missouri QB played a total of five games last season, throwing for 1020 yards and seven TDs. In those five games, Denver was 4-1.

When he signed a two-year, $36 million deal last year with the Denver Broncos, quarterback Case Keenum thought he will be the team’s starting QB for the foreseeable future. Broncos’ GM John Elway, on the other hand, got another idea after 6-10 season in 2018 and decided to trade for veteran Joe Flacco.

Keenum now finally decided to speak publicly about the trade during his recent interview with Sports Spectrum Podcast, saying he was “shocked” by the move.

“[Broncos general manager John] Elway called me that morning and we had a great conversation, which he didn’t have to do, and I appreciated that,”- said Keenum. “I was definitely shocked, it was a surprise for us and I think probably for the first day or so that’s kind of what it was. But for us, we’re definitely disappointed, it’s not something we wanted to happen. I know that everybody’s doing their job and John feels like that was a chance for him to help the Broncos out.”

Case Keenum didn’t have bad numbers in his lone season with Denver Broncos, managing to complete 62.3 percent of his passes for 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns. The team, however, played poorly overall and Elway decided to try with a different approach at the QB position.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapaport, Broncos’ plan is to try and find a buyer for Keenum among NFL teams in a need of a quarterback. If they failed to do so, they will give the player an option to take a significant pay cut or get released.

“For us, it’s another chapter in our lives and we’re going to roll with it,” – the 31-year-old QB added. “We’re going to approach this like I do everything in my entire life, and that it’s not by accident this has happened. It’s just another chapter and another opportunity to overcome some adversity in my life.”

Baltimore Ravens are officially Lamar Jackson’s team moving forward. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Ravens have agreed to trade quarterback Joe Flacco to the Denver Broncos, clearing the way for Jackson to retain his place as the starting quarterback.

Since no deal can be processed on March 13th, when the new NFL season officially kicks off, neither teams can’t make a confirmation or comment on the terms of the deal. According to sources, however, Broncos will send a mid-round pick to Broncos in exchange for Flacco.

For the Ravens, this trade means that they are fully committed to Lamar Jackson as their franchise’s quarterback. Jackson, who was 32nd pick in 2018 NFL Draft, stepped in for Joe Flacco in Week 9 and turned around the team’s season leading Baltimore to an unexpected playoff appearance. After this, the Ravens decided to move on from Flacco, who was struggling with production in recent years.

Denver Broncos, on the other hand, are admitting that their experiment with Case Keenum has failed. Broncos signed Keenum to a two-year, $36 million contract in 2018 after his productive season with Minnesota Vikings. Still, the 30-year-old was unable to replicate the same level of play in Denver and ended up tied for second-most interceptions in the league.

Joe Flacco spent his entire career with the Baltimore Ravens, who selected him 18th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was named the team’s starting quarterback in his rookie season when he led them to AFC Championship Game. During his 10 years with the franchise, Flacco added five more playoff trips while leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl win in 2012.
