Although he received a substantial amount of money not to play for the New York Knicks in the next two years, center Joakim Noah doesn’t mean to lay back and enjoy it. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Noah is close to agreeing to a one-year deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

According to the sources close to the league, Grizzlies contacted Noah for negotiations four weeks ago. The deal between the two sides should be announced at some point next week.

After confronting with the Knicks’ then-coach Jeff Hornacek in January 2018, Joakim Noah was sent away from the team and never got back. New York then tried to trade the 33-year-old in the offseason, but no one was willing to take his contract which would pay him $37.8 million in the next two years. Failing to find a trade partner for Noah, Knicks decided to use waive-and-stretch provision on his contract before the start of the regular season.

Joakim Noah never justified the big money New York Knick spent on him and ended up playing only 46 games for the New York Knicks as a starter, averaging 5.0 points, 8.7 rebound, and 2.2 assists per game. Still, he could prove to be a good addition for the Memphis Grizzlies and their style of play, being former NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

New York Knicks were trying to move on from center Joakim Noah for some time now, but they have failed to find a trade partner for the 33-year-old and his $19.3 million contract. Finally, the team stopped trying on Saturday and decided to waive Noah using the stretch provision.

By waiving Noah with a stretch provision, Knicks will stretch the $19.3 million salary cap hit for 2019-20 to $6.4 million. The downside of the move is that they will have a $6.4 million cap hit in the two seasons beyond that as well.

Reportedly, the New York Knicks have decided to move on from Joakim Noah’s contract earlier so they could pursue a max-contract player in the summer of 2019. With Noah out, Knicks will have $31 million in cap space next year but would have to make a few moves to get to $38.15 million annually, which is projected max salary for players with 10-plus years of service in the league.

The 2019 class of free agents is believed to be one of the most exciting ones in the last couple of years and will include Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler.

Joakim Noah joined the Knicks in 2016, signing a four-year, $72 million contract. Noah, however, never managed to justify big money and went on to play 53 games for New York in two years, before being removed from the team after a conflict with coach Jeff Hornacek in February.

New York Knicks are looking to the future and building a team that will become a significant force in the NBA once again. It appears, however, that this future will not include their center Joakim Noah at every cost.

According to ESPN‘s sources, if Knicks are unable to find a trade partner for Noah and his two years, $37.8 million, contract, the team will use the NBA’s waive-and-stretch provision. This way they will have the 33-year-old off the team, and his salary cap hit divided into smaller amounts over the next three years.

After signing a four-year, $72 million contract with the New York Knicks in 2016, Joakim Noah’s career took a downward spiral shortly after. Due to various injuries, he was limited to 46 games in his first year with the team and averaged 5.0 points and 8.7 assists per game.

After missing the first part of the 2017-18 season due to another injury, Noah joined the team in November but only managed to be featured in seven games. He engaged in a heated verbal altercation with coach Jeff Hornacek and was absent from the team since.

Prior to joining Knicks, Joakim Noah was considered one of the league’s premier defenders. He was selected by the Chicago Bulls in 2007 NBA Draft with the ninth overall pick. He went on to earn two NBA All-Star selections and All-NBA First Team honors during his time in Chicago. Noah was also named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.

New York Knicks are looking to the future and building a team that will become a significant force in the NBA once again. It appears, however, that this future will not include their center Joakim Noah at every cost.
