ESPN’s analyst JJ Redick, who played for 15 seasons in NBA before retiring in 2021, is one of the candidates the Toronto Raptors are considering for their head coaching vacancy.

According to ESPN’s NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Redick met with Raptors’ brass this week in Toronto. He is one of the dozen candidates that took part in the first round of interviews.

Toronto’s interest in Redick isn’t a surprise since he is respected in NBA circles for his basketball acumen and was courted by other teams for assistant positions in the past. However, the lack of coaching experience might work against him, considering that the Raptors are in win-now mode.

The Raptors fired head coach Nick Nurse following a disappointing 2022-23 campaign in which they missed out on the playoffs. The franchise reportedly initially wanted to replace him with former Boston Celtics’ head coach Ime Udoka, but he ended up accepting the job with the Houston Rockets.

JJ Redick played for six different NBA franchises during his career, including the Orlando Magic, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 12.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game over the course of his time in NBA while being considered one of the better three-point shooters in the league.

JJ Redick didn’t take long to land another job after officially retiring from professional basketball last month. Redick’s next step will be television, as he recently accepted the position of an NBA analyst with ESPN.

According to the network, Redick will make the debut in his new role in early November for the Brooklyn Nets vs. Atlanta Hawks game. He is expected to do studio analyst work while also contributing to a number of ESPN’s shows during the week.

Working in media won’t be a new thing for Redick, considering he already has several podcasts to his name. The most recent is The Old Man and the Three, which sees Redick and producer Tommy Alter chatting with NBA stars, celebs, and even politicians about an array of topics.

JJ Redick entered the NBA in 2006 as the Orlando Magic’s 11th overall pick in that year’s draft. Redick spent seven years with the Magic before embarking on stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the New Orleans Pelicans. He is considered one of the better shooters in NBA history.

Reddick decided to wrap up his career after a disappointing second part of the 2020-21 season with the Dallas Mavericks that saw him play just 13 games and average 4.4 points per game.

“After 15 years in the NBA, I am excited to take what I have learned on the court and be able to provide my insight and strong opinions about the game I love,” Redick said in a statement shared by ESPN. “I am thrilled to have found a place on the biggest platform in sports, ESPN. I look forward to starting my post-playing career with such an incredible organization.”

Veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick decided to end his NBA career. The 37-year-old sniper announced the news on his podcast The Old Man & The Three on Tuesday.

Talking about his decision, Redick said that he had offers from teams during the offseason but put them on hold in order to figure out whether he wanted to play for one more year. After weighing down both the good and the bad, he decided to step away from basketball.

“I have some clarity now, and I know it’s time,” Redick explained. “It’s time for me to be a dad. It’s time for me to reflect, pause, and it’s time for me to get ready for the next phase of my life.”

Redick also confirmed the news via his social media.

JJ Redick entered the 2020-21 NBA season as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans but ended up on the trade block midway through the season as the organization opted to give more playing time to their younger players. Redick didn’t object to the trade but believed the team would do him a solid one and trade him to the Brooklyn Nets so he could be closer to his family.

Instead, the Pelicans shipped Redick to the Dallas Mavericks, where the veteran played only 13 games due to a combination of injuries and struggles on the floor. He finished the 2020-21 campaign, averaging just 7.4 points per game while shooting 37.1 percent from the three-point line.

Redick previously also played with the Orlando Magic, the Milwaukee Bucks, the LA Clippers, and the Philadelphia 76ers. He retires with 1,950 made three-pointers, which ranks him 15th overall on the NBA’s all-time list.

The New Orleans Pelicans had high hopes for the 2020-21 NBA season, but it looks like the slow start of the season has got them to lower their expectations. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Pelicans are looking to be sellers on the trade market in the coming weeks, with Lonzo Ball and JJ Redick being among the available players.

Charania reports that New Orleans has received several calls about the availability of Ball and Redick in recent days and responded positively to them. The team showed “openness” to discussing trade scenarios with interested parties, and the duo might be moved before the trade deadline if the right offer comes.

Besides having a poor start to the season, there are several other reasons why the Pelicans are interested in trading these players.

Lonzo Ball is set to be a restricted free agent next offseason, which puts the team in danger of losing him for nothing if the 23-year-old point guard receives an offer they are not comfortable with matching. Also, Ball has not been playing very well this season, averaging 12 points, a career-low 3.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and shooting just 29.1 from the three-point arc.

JJ Redick, on the other hand, is a respected shooter around the NBA and could bring in some valuable assets for the future if the team can’t compete at the moment. By moving on from Redick, the Pelicans could also give more minutes to their young guards Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kira Lewis.

Redick also hasn’t been on his usual level in 2020-21, averaging only 8.1 points per game.
