The Philadelphia Phillies face more obstacles as they attempt to bounce back after a dreadful start to the 2022 MLB season. The latest one is the injury of veteran second baseman Jean Segura, who is expected to miss up to three months with a finger injury.

Segura injured his index finger during Tuesday’s 4-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The injury turned out to be a fracture, and the 32-year-old player was forced to undergo surgery on Friday.

Philly’s manager Joe Girardi confirmed the news in a recent chat with reporters and said that Segura’s absence would be “a big loss” for the team.

“Jean is an everyday player that is productive for us,” said Girardi. “This is a difficult loss. I am not going to sugarcoat it. But teams go through this, and you have to find a way to figure it out.”

The Phillies are currently third in NL East with a 22-29 record. They are 3-7 in their last ten games and were on a five-game losing streak at one point.

Jean Segura is currently playing his fourth season in Phillies’ jersey. He played in 44 games in 2022, hitting .275 with six home runs and 19 RBIs. Segura previously suited up for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners, among other teams. His MLB resume includes two All-Star appearances.

I think as we’re trying to improve on an 80-win team to try to put ourselves in playoff contention, we needed to identify the areas where there are opportunities to make improvements like that, and I think shortstop was an area for us.“

This move allowed the Phillies to improve immediately while not giving back any cash and prospects in return. The team also maintained salary cap flexibility which will enable them to pursue high-profile free agents like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.
