Philadelphia Phillies started their offseason with a bold move by acquiring All-Star infielder Jean Segura from Seattle Mariners. This multiplayer deal also included relievers Juan Nicasio and James Pazos also making their way to Philadelphia while first baseman Carlos Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford are heading in the opposite direction.

“To add an All-Star shortstop like Jean Segura moves the needle quite a bit, probably several wins,” – said Phillies’ general manager Matt Klentak after sealing the deal. “I think that’s important. I think as we’re trying to improve on an 80-win team to try to put ourselves in playoff contention, we needed to identify the areas where there are opportunities to make improvements like that, and I think shortstop was an area for us.“

This move allowed the Phillies to improve immediately while not giving back any cash and prospects in return. The team also maintained salary cap flexibility which will enable them to pursue high-profile free agents like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

Jean Segura joined Seattle Mariners in 2017 and has established himself as one of MLB’s premier shortstops in the last two years. He was especially impressive this year when managed to have.304 batting average with 10 home runs and 63 RBIs, earning himself an American League All-Star appearance.
