Despite his struggles as Washington Redskins’ head coach, Jay Gruden quickly managed to get another job in the NFL. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Gruden is finalizing an agreement to become the new offensive coordinator for Jacksonville Jaguars.

Gruden was fired by Redskins in October, after spending more than five years with the organization. In a recent interview, the 52-year-old stated that he would like to return to the NFL as a head coach, but he wasn’t considered by teams with head-coaching vacancies.

Jags parted ways with their OC John DeFilippo last week, and have been interviewing potential candidates ever since. Besides Gruden, Jacksonville reportedly also had talks with former New York Giants’ HC Ben McAdoo.

Jaguars hope that Jay Gruden can summon back his magic as an offensive coordinator and improve their stale offense that struggled to put points on the board in 2019. Gruden previously served as OC for Cincinnati Bengals and was credited with helping Andy Dalton establish himself as a franchise quarterback.

Gruden will be tasked to improve quarterback play in Jacksonville as well, but his job will largely depend on the head coach Doug Marrone’s decision on the team’s starting QB in 2020. Jags can choose between second-year QB Gardner Minshew and veteran Nick Foles.

Jay Gruden isn’t considering taking a break after Washington Redskins fired him back in October. Instead, he wants to get back into coaching right away.

Gruden recently made an appearance on Ian Rapoport’s RapSheet and Friends podcast and told him that he hopes he could get a head coaching position for the 2020 season.

“Hopefully I’ll get an opportunity to talk to some owners and maybe get another opportunity to be a head coach,” said Gruden. “I could take a year off if I don’t get that job that I’m looking for, or if I don’t get offered one.”

It’s unclear whether Gruden will get a shot at currently available head coaching vacancies, considering his unsuccessful stint with Washington Redskins. During his five years with the organization, he compiled a 35-50-1 record while making playoffs just once.

Despite his wish to bounce back immediately, Gruden isn’t willing to take any job out there.

“We’ll have to wait and see what’s available. Some of these jobs are not easy, the situations,” he added. “You just got to make sure you’re with the right people, that’s the most important thing. Whatever the opportunity is, whether it’s a coordinator or a head coach, you got to make sure you mesh with the people that you’re working with.”

A more realistic option for Jay Gruden at the moment would be as a coordinator or position coach. He previously worked as an offensive assistant with Tampa Bay Buccaneers while his brother Jon Gruden coached the team. Gruden also served as an offensive coordinator under Marvin Lewis at Cincinnati Bengals before taking over the Redskins.

The NFL head coaching shakeup continues as the Washington Redskins named Ron Rivera their new head coach for the 2020 season. Immediately after the announcement, Rivera brought in Jack Del Rio as the defensive coordinator.

Rivera, 57, coached the Panthers for nine seasons before being fired on December 3 with a 5-7 record. Despite his recent firing, he was instrumental in turning around the Panthers after the 2010 season and finished with a 76-63-1 record, including four trips to the playoffs and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.

Del Rio has been an ESPN analyst, but was also the defensive coordinator for some of the top defenses in football during the few years he held that position (Panthers in 2002, and Broncos from 2012-14). He was also the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-2011 and the Oakland Raiders from 2015-2017.

The Redskins fired coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start in his 6th season in Washington. Rivera will become the 7th head coach for the Redskins since 2000, and will inherit a very talented, young team set to get the 2nd overall draft pick and will have much potential in the coming seasons.

After a disastrous 0-5 start to the 2019 season, the Washington Redskins found themselves with no alternatives. They had to fire coach Jay Gruden, and they did so on Monday after Washington´s blowout loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

Gruden leaves Washington after five full seasons at the helm of the team, in which he won one NFC East title in 2015 and only managed to play in one playoff game, a Wild Card weekend loss to the Green Bay Packers in that same season.

The Ohio natives tenure with Washington was defined, quite simply, by mediocrity. Gruden’s teams never broke the nine-win barrier in his term with the Skins, finishing either just over or just under the .500 mark in every season except 2014, when the team went 4-12.

After the disastrous start to this season, Gruden leaves the franchise with a ghastly 35-49-1 mark as head coach.

The Redskins, who are currently one of four winless teams in the league, named former Raiders coach Bill Callahan as interim head coach for the rest of the season. He will look to inject some life into a team that has, frankly, looked uncompetitive so far in the 2019 season.

The NFL preseason is heating up, with only two games left on the summer slate and two weeks to go until the regular season kicks off.

While this time of the year is usually a time for optimism and fresh beginnings, there is more than a handful of coaches that are feeling the pressure going into the season for various reasons. While coaches like Bill Belichick and Sean Payton might not be worried about their job security, some coaches know that they either must perform in 2019 or find themselves without a position.

Here are four NFL coaches that are on the hot seat and under pressure going into the beginning of the 2019 season.

Jay Gruden: Washington Redskins

Jay Gruden joked before the season started that he knows that he’ll be on his way out in Washington if his team doesn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2019, and it seems like that scenario is more likely than not.

Gruden has spent five years at the helm of the Redskins without accomplishing a playoff win, and this is the last year of his contract. If he doesn’t qualify this year, which will be a big task without injured QB Alex Smith, he could be on his way out.

Doug Marrone: Jacksonville Jaguars

Marrone’s Jaguars were the talk of the league in 2017, making a surprise run to the AFC Championship Game before eventually falling to the New England Patriots.

His team last year was a huge disappointment, finishing with a 5-11 record in last place in the AFC South. If the Jags don’t get their mojo back in 2019, it seems likely that the Marrone Magic in Florida will have run out.

Jason Garrett: Dallas Cowboys

Being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is never easy, and it’s even more difficult when the pressure is on after you haven’t made a Super Bowl after nine years on the job.

Garrett and the Cowboys are undergoing a rough preseason, with contract negotiations stalling the arrivals of QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott to camp. This could lead the team to struggle with drama and ineffectiveness, which could lead to Garrett’s decade in Dallas coming to a close.

Pat Shurmur: New York Giants

Pat Shurmur has only been at the helm of the Giants for one season, but the disastrous 5-11 season that he led the team to last year has some fans already calling for his head.

The Giants don’t figure to be much better this season in the ultra-competitive NFC East, and he could be forced out if the team doesn’t at least compete for a playoff spot.
