Veteran tight end Jason Witten is leaving Dallas Cowboys for the second time in his career. But this time, he won’t retire. Instead, Witten will take on the colors of Las Vegas Raiders.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Witten has agreed to a one year deal with the Raiders on Tuesday. The Cowboys’ legend will reportedly have a salary of up to $4.75 million in 2020.

After following the 2017 NFL season, Witten decided to return to professional football in 2019 on a one-year deal with Dallas, where he spent the first 15 years of his career. He ended up starting all 16 games while contributing with 63 receptions for 529 yards and four touchdowns. These were among his lowest numbers since his rookie year.

During the offseason, Witten expressed the desire to continue playing football in 2020, saying he wants it to be with Cowboys. However, the Cowboys had other plans, which allowed the Raiders to swoop in and sign the 37-year-old.

Jason Witten leaves the Cowboys as one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise. His 16 seasons and 255 games played the most of any Cowboys’ player while he also holds records franchise records for receptions (1,215) and receiving yards (12,977). During his time in Dallas, Witten earned 11 Pro Bowl nods alongside two First-Team All-Pro selections.

Las Vegas Raiders raid of Cowboys didn’t stop with Witten, as the team also signed defensive tackle Maliek Collins and safety Jeff Heath from Dallas. Raiders also brought in Rod Marinelli, who was Dallas’ defensive coordinator for the past five years, to coach their defensive line.

Veteran tight end Jason Witten enjoyed his comeback to football so much that he’s not even thinking about retiring again at this point. Witten, who came out of retirement to play with his Dallas Cowboys last season, recently said that he intends to play in 2020 as well.

Witten made an appearance at Collegiate Man of the Year Award show on Tuesday and used the opportunity to discuss his football future. The 37-year-old admitted that he sees coaching as a future career, but has that he has his mind set on playing at this point. He also acknowledged that he might have to go somewhere else in order to do so.

“I just think, yeah, coaching is in my future, but right now, I want to play while I can,” said Witten. “We’ll see where that takes place. Of course, I want that to be with the Dallas Cowboys. I’ll always be a Dallas Cowboy. But I also understand that, with all the changes, I may have to go somewhere else.”

Jason Witten entered the league in 2003 as Cowboys’ third-round pick and remained with the franchise until 2018 when he decided to retire. Witten joined Monday Night Football team shortly after that but never settled in the analyst role.

After one year in front of the camera, Witten un-retired and signed with Cowboys once again. He started all 16 games last season, catching 63 passes for 529 yards and four touchdowns.

It looks like former Dallas Cowboys’ tight end Jason Witten didn’t enjoy his retirement all that much, since he is returning to professional football. Less than a year since he left NFL, Witten decided to come back and sign a one-year deal with the Cowboys.

According to ESPN, the 36-year-old will receive $3.5 million for 2019, but the value of the contract could go up to $5 million based on incentives.

The news was confirmed on the Cowboys’ official social media.

“The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong,” – said Witten in a statement. “This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship. This was completely my decision, and I am very comfortable with it. I’m looking forward to getting back in the dirt.”

Jason Witten announced his retirement in May 2018 in order to join ESPN‘s Monday Night Football. He signed a four-year deal with the network, but obviously liked being more on the pitch viewing the game from the studio.

“I’ve known for about 10 to 14 days that he was seriously deliberating this,” – said Dallas’ owner/general manager Jerry Jones. “As you know, when Jason retired last year, he had a real difficult decision. He obviously missed it. I’ve never seen anybody really embrace the physical part of football like Jason. He missed that. The rougher it is, the better. We’re happy to have him. We think he can still play and he thinks he can still play.”

Jason Witten spent his entire career with Dallas Cowboys, who took him in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. During his time with the organization he earned 11 Pro Bowl selections while receiving two First-team All-Pro honors.  Witten currently holds several Cowboys’ franchise records including most games played (239), most career receptions (1,152), and most career receiving yards (12,448) He is also ranked second in all-time career receptions and receiving yards by an NFL tight end, with only Tony Gonzalez being ahead of him.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten decided it was time to end his football career. The 35-year-old announced his retirement on Thursday and is set to join ESPN’s Monday Night Football as an analyst. Witten will leave the Cowboys as the player who played most games in the franchise’s history.

I never wanted this day to come.” – said Witten at a press conference announcing his retirement. “But it does come for all of us. My mindset has always been that they would probably have to drag me off the field. And I was OK with that.

Witten considered joining the Monday Night Football for some time now and reportedly had an option to play out the 2018 and join the MNF’s team in 2019. Still, the offer was too good, and he decided to take the opportunity right away.

If you can’t play it, you want to coach it. And if you can’t coach it, you want to be around it,” – Witten explained his decision to join MNF. “I think it’s a unique opportunity to join a good team and to be able to partner with guys that have that same passion and a huge platform to share our love for the game and the National Football League.

Cowboys drafted Jason Witten in the third round of 2003 NFL Draft and played in 15 games in his rookie season while earning NFL All-Rookie Team honors. He went on to establish himself as one of the league’s most reliable players, playing in all games of the regular season from 2004 to 2017. Witten earned 11 Pro Bowl selections during his career alongside two First-team All-Pro and two Second-team All-Pro honors.
