San Francisco 49ers are entering the 2020 NFL season with serious corner depth. The team just announced that they re-signed veterans Jason Verrett and Dontae Johnson,  bringing back the duo on one-year deals.

Verrett, was a first-round pick in 2014, joined San Francisco last season. He only played one game, however, before sitting out the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.

Johnson also joined 49ers in 2019 for his third stint with the franchise. He made seven appearances, but only contributed with three tackles.

Both Verrett and Johnson are expected to be backups and eventually fill in if some of the starters get injured. The 49ers will most likely roll with Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon as the starters on the cornerback position.

Jason Verrett had a successful start of his NFL career, even becoming a Pro Bowler in his first three seasons with the Chargers. Unfortunately, since 2015 Verret’s career has been plagued with injuries, and he only played six games in the last four years. His career stats include 80 tackles, five interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

Dontae Johnson gained a journeyman reputation over the years, having dressed up for six different teams in six years.  Johnson’s career stats include 161 tackles, 21 pass deflections, two interceptions, and two defensive TDs.

Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett will have to spend another season watching the NFL games from the sidelines. According to NFL Network, Verrett suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the entire 2018 season. Chargers confirmed the news about Verrett’s injury on their social media.

Jason Verrett has been diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon. He will complete further testing tomorrow.

Jason Verrett also missed the 2017 season, after suffering a knee injury in Week 1. Before this, Verrett partially tore his ACL in 2016 in Week 4 and was shut down for the season.
After hearing the news, Verrett’s teammates were heartbroken seeing him suffering another season-ending injury.

“I missed half the season last year, and he missed the whole one, and we went through the rehab phase together,” – said Denzel Perryman. “So to see him go down, it was devastating. It was sad. It was a comeback season for the both of us, so this hurts my heart. But he’s in my prayers and his family is in my prayers. I just wish him a speedy recovery.“

“I’m very emotional over it,” – Keenan Allen added. “It’s hard to watch him go down like that after he worked so hard to come back this season. I know how tough it is. I’m just sending him prayers.“

He had a promising start of his rookie season, which was cut short to six games due to Verrett having to go season-ending shoulder surgery. In 2015, he finally managed to stay healthy, playing in 14 games and being selected for the Pro Bowl. Then came the ACL tear in 2016, and Verrett never managed to stay healthy enough to showcase his talents once again.
