Defensive back Jason McCourty announced on Friday that he is retiring from professional football. McCourty walks away after spending 13 years in the NFL, suiting up for four different franchises, and winning a Super Bowl LIII with the New England Patriots.

McCourty, who played with the Miami Dolphins in 2021, made the announcement via a video posted on his Instagram.

“These past 13 seasons have been one hell of a journey,” said McCourty. “And as I reflect and look back on my career, I have far surpassed any and every expectation I set for myself back in 2009 — and that’s what I’m most proud of when I look back at my career.”

McCourty started his career as a sixth-round selection by Tennessee Titans in 2009. He became a starter in Tennessee by his third season and went on to spend a total of eight years with the franchise. Rutgers product then played one year for the Cleveland Browns before joining the Patriots in 2018.

In New England, McCourty reunited with his identical twin brother Devin. The duo helped the Pats win a Super Bowl in their first season together while becoming the first set of twins to play in one in NFL history. New England kept the McCourty twins together for three years before Jason left ahead of the 2021 season to join Miami.

Jason McCourty played 173 NFL games during his career. He made a total of 744 tackles while adding 18 interceptions, 108 pass deflections, and two defensive touchdowns.

New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty will consider retiring from the NFL should his team win Sunday’s Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

McCourty, 31, has spent his entire nine-year NFL career in New England, winning two rings and racking up 714 tackles, 80 passes and 21 intercepts alongside his twin brother Jason.

“I don’t know for sure, man, but I do look at retirement,” McCourty said. “If we can win this game, win it with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that’ll top that. So I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple days with these guys.”

While the safety back has racked up enough numbers to make it to three All-Pro teams and two Pro Bowl games, his’ brother hasn’t been that lucky. Most of Jason’s time in the NFL was spent with the Titans where he logged 505 tackles, 73 defense passes, 13 interceptions and six fumbles.

Jason spent eight seasons in Tennessee before a stint with Cleveland landed him a trade with the Patriots. Luckily, New England has been good to him, appearing in 16 games and tallying 70 tackles and 10 defense passes. On Sunday, the twins will play together for the ultimate prize, and there, Devin will make a clear decision about his future in the NFL.
